A brief presentation of the Dachsi Apso

Playful and courageous, the Dachsi Apso is a small hybrid breed developed from the Dachshund and the Lhassa Apso. The breed's history is not well documented, and it is suspected that it was developed as a result of the creative dog trend. The Dachsi Apso is perfect for small children and families due to its social nature. This playful dog can indulge in nuisance barking if not trained early. Appearance can vary due to the absence of a breed standard. Maintenance of this breed is relatively simple, requiring daily brushing and grooming. Its moderate energy level will require exercise in the form of walks or play to meet its daily needs.

History of the Dachsi Apso

The history of the Dachsi Apso is not well documented, but it is suspected that the breed was developed as a result of the designer dog movement of the last two decades. It's equally important to review the origins of the Dachsi Apso's parent breeds: the Dachshund and the Lhassa Apso.

A little of the Dachshund

The Dachshund was developed in Germany in the 15th century. The breed was originally considered the badger dog because of its hunting skills. The breed was known for hunting badgers, wild boar, foxes and deer. In the early 20th century, small Dachshunds even hunted cottontail rabbits. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Dachshund was modified by German foresters who wanted a fearless dog capable of burrowing into badger areas. The smooth Dachshund was the first type created, followed by the long-haired Dachshunds. The breed is praised for being the only dog recognized by the American Kennel Club that could hunt above and below ground. Its short legs were perfect for digging efficiently in the ground. In the 1800s, the breed was bred to be a companion for the royal courts of Europe. In 1879, a breed standard was developed for the Dachshund. In 1885, the breed was imported to the United States. By the 1950s, the Dachshund had become one of the most popular family dogs in the USA.

A little of the Lhassa Apso

The Lhassa Apso was developed in Tibet and took its name from the holy city of Lhasa. The breed is an ancient one that was considered a symbol of nobility and would protect its homeland. The breed's history dates back to 800 BC, when it was considered a lucky charm. Its talent for guarding temples and monasteries remained a favorable trait for the breed. From 1583 to 1908, the Dalai Lama was known to send the Lhassa Apso as a sacred gift to the Emperor of China. In 1933, the first Lhassa Apso was imported to the USA. In 1935, the AKC officially recognized the breed.

Appearance of the Dachsi Apso

As there is no breed standard for the Dachsi Apso, this breed can inherit dominant traits from any of its parent breeds. Each Dachsi Apso may resemble the Dachshund or the Lhassa Apso. Generally speaking, the Dachsi Apso is known for having a stiff, hard coat of short to medium length that is water repellent. The breed is scruffy and may need grooming. Its short legs resemble the Dachshund, while its eyes resemble the Lhassa Apso. His curious expression indicates that he wants to know what you're doing. His long, feathered tail hangs high on his back. His chest is spacious like the Dachshund. His voice is very Dachshund-like. His stance is one of alert curiosity.

Temperament of the Dachsi Apso

The Dachsi Apso is an adorable, clumsy hybrid breed that loves the company of others. They love to accompany you wherever you go. He'll lie on your lap and be the first at the door as soon as he hears someone approaching. His adorable character will make everyone fall in love with him. This breed is ideal with families and young children. Because of his hunting nature, he will need early training and socialization to get along with other animals. He is generally friendly towards other dogs. He may become protective of his family and his environment. Early training must be provided so that your protective dog can tell the difference between a friendly stranger and an unwelcome intruder. The Dachsi Apso's energy levels are moderate because he's curious about everything. He'll want to know where you're going and why. As long as he's provided with the necessary exercise, your Dachsi Apso will appreciate you.

Needs and activities of the Dachsi Apso

The Dachsi Apso has moderate energy levels, requiring between 30 and 40 minutes of exercise a day. Your dog will benefit from activities such as walking, running, swimming and fetching. Around 2 walks a day are recommended to maintain ideal weight and optimum health. An ideal environment for your Dachsi Apso will be an urban home with a fenced yard in a warm climate. Apartment living may be acceptable as long as he receives the necessary daily exercise requirements. If left to its own devices for long periods, it is likely to destroy some of your possessions.

Maintenance of the Dachsi Apso

Although the Lhassa Apso is considered a hypoallergenic breed, it's not known whether the Dachsi Apso would inherit the same characteristics. Loss levels in this breed are considered moderate and will require daily brushing with the slicker or pin brush. This small breed is not considered a drooler and has no significant odors. Its coat may need professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks to avoid tangles. Nails should be trimmed every 2 to 3 weeks. Ears should be wiped and cleaned weekly to prevent debris build-up. Teeth should be brushed regularly to prevent tartar build-up, especially as small dogs are prone to dental problems.
