This breed is also known as

Réunion Dog

The Coton from Réunion was a Bichon-type dog formerly found on the African island of Réunion, located in the Indian Ocean about 800 km east of Madagascar. Most authors maintain that these dogs were introduced to the island by the French (likely as ancestors of the Bichon Frisé), while others suggest they arrived via the Bichon Tenerife from the Canary Islands. Either or both of these theories could be correct, though it matters little, as the same common ancestor was likely used to create both lineages.

The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 led to a significant decline in Réunion's commercial importance. The Coton from Réunion subsequently disappeared, but the breed migrated to Madagascar, where it became the foundation for the modern Coton de Tuléar.
