It is distinguished by a fox-like head, erect triangular ears, and a plumed tail that curls over its back. Highly energetic and alert, it is naturally wary of strangers. Despite its small size, it possesses a strong territorial instinct and raises the alarm by barking loudly at the approach of intruders. Lively and active, it requires daily exercise and mental stimulation. This highly localized breed—rare even in its country of origin—is the subject of active conservation efforts aimed at preserving its unique genetic traits and preventing its extinction. The Tonya Finosu makes an excellent watchdog while remaining an affectionate and faithful family companion. Due to its small size, it is not suited for guarding or deterrence, but its alert temperament makes it a perfect alarm dog. It will not hesitate to bark to warn you if it hears a suspicious noise near the house or sees a stranger approaching. It can also keep watch over farms, where it is sometimes used to hunt rodents.

Its coat is always white; this is the only permitted color. It is also a highly functional coat! It is a dense, thick double coat that helps the dog withstand the harsh, rainy, and cold conditions of the Black Sea region, where the breed was developed.
