The Buckley Feist originated in the southern United States. It was developed by Jack Buckley, a native of Kentucky. However, the breed is not recognized by any major kennel club, with the exception of the Buckley Registry. This may be because many kennel clubs consider the Buckley to be a variant of the Mountain Feist. The Buckley Mountain Feist is a rare, small-to-medium-sized hunting dog (35–46 cm, 8–13.5 kg) from Kentucky; it was selectively bred by Jack Buckley over a period of more than a century for hunting squirrels and small game. They are highly energetic, intelligent, and agile dogs capable of treeing game; they are known for being loyal family companions that are gentle with children, while proving to be relentless and highly focused hunters in the woods. Although bred for hunting, the Buckley Mountain Feist is a people-oriented dog that makes an excellent pet and gets along very well with children. Despite its hunting background, the Buckley Mountain Feist remains sociable with children and other household pets.

They adapt well to indoor living but require active daily walks if they are not hunting. They are recognized by the BMFR and the DRA. Feists are often used to hunt squirrels. They have a short, tight coat that is often multicolored (white, black, tan). They have erect ears and a tail that is either docked or left natural. While affectionate and sociable with their families, they possess a strong prey drive. Their energy levels are extremely high; they require long daily walks, jogging sessions, or hunting opportunities to burn off energy. In general, they enjoy good health and have a life expectancy of approximately 10 to 18 years. Intelligent and eager to please, they are well-suited to active owners, including novices. Adaptable by nature, they thrive best in homes with space to run rather than in small apartments. Developed in the Appalachian Mountains, these dogs serve a dual purpose: they are both devoted hunting partners and affectionate companions. Buckley Feists are renowned for their intelligence, agility, and exceptional sense of smell. Possessing a strong prey drive, they excel at tasks requiring speed, stamina, and determination. They are also known for their versatility, easily adapting to various hunting environments and types of game.
