A brief presentation of the Black Mouth Pom Cur

The Black Mouth Pom Cur is a hybrid breed. It's a mix of Black Mouth Cur and Spitz Toy / Pomeranian. This mix makes for a very unique breed, as the Black Mouth Cur is traditionally a hunter and the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is a toy-sized companion dog. The Black Mouth Pom Cur is really a blend of the two breeds. It will be a little bigger than a Spitz Toy / Pomeranian but will generally have long hair like the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian. The Black Mouth Cur is a relatively new breed, dating back to 1964. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is descended from the older Spitz breeds and is closely related to the Samoyed, American Eskimo Dog and German Spitz. The first Spitz Toy / Pomeranian weighed around 13.5 kilos, the Black Mouth Pom Cur will be close to this weight. The Black Mouth Cur is a highly trainable and intelligent dog. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is also highly intelligent and full of life. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian often thinks it's a much bigger dog and isn't above other dogs. They also tend to bark a lot. Because the Black Mouth Pom Cur is likely to have a long coat, it will need some grooming to keep its coat shiny and clean.

History of the Black Mouth Pom Cur

The Black Mouth Cur is not the indoor type, however, when carefully crossed with the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian, owners can have a medium-sized dog that serves as a great indoor companion. The name Black Mouth Pom Cur is a blend of the names of the two parent breeds. The Black Mouth Pom Cur is recognized by the DRA - Dog Registry of America. Fred Gipson in his famous novel "Old Yeller" talks about a Black Mouth Cur.

A little of the Black Mouth Cur

The Black Mouth Cur originated in the southern United States in 1964, when a man named L.H. Ladner shared his breeding records. His family had bred the dog and the numerous records proved the origin of the Black Mouth Cur line. While it's not known exactly which breeds were combined before this point to create the modern Black Mouth Cur, we do know that it makes an excellent hunting dog.

A little of the German Toy Spitz / Pomeranian

The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is a distant relative of the Northern Spitz family. Pomeranians have always been popular, and it's said that Martin Luther (the church reformer), Michelangelo, Isaac Newton and Mozart all owned Spitz Toy / Pomeranians. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian was also popular in royal circles. Even Queen Victoria owned a Spitz Toy / Pomeranian, and many believe that Queen Victoria, who was quite the dog breeder, was influential in breeding the small-sized Spitz Toy / Pomeranian. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is recognized by the American Kennel Club, and was added to the pedigree book in 1888. It has always been a very popular breed, especially since its introduction to America.

Appearance of the Black Mouth Pom Cur

The Black Mouth Pom Cur is a medium-sized dog. It traditionally has a light beige coat, although it can show shades of yellow, fawn and brindle. The black muzzle is normally a trademark characteristic of the Black Mouth Cur. It has medium-sized ears that usually hang down. Tail length varies, from short from birth to longer. It can weigh up to 43 kilos. He generally has a short coat. Although it is an outdoor dog, it does not have a waterproof coat. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is considered a toy-sized dog. The Pom is available in several colors: black, black and tan, blue, blue and tan, chocolate, chocolate and tan, cream, cream sand, orange, orange sand, red, red sand, sand, brindle and white. At its heaviest, the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian often weighs just 3 kilos. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian has a long topcoat and short undercoat. Given the genetics of the two parent breeds, we can expect the Black Mouth Pom Cur to be around 13.5 kilos, about the weight of the first Spitz Toy / Pomeranian. The Pom Cur will be about 30.5 centimeters tall. It will generally have the long, silky outer coat of the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian. Coloration will depend on the Pomeranian parent, but often the Pom Cur will be a light tan with black markings and a black muzzle.

Temperament of the Black Mouth Pom Cur

The Black Mouth Cur was bred for hunting, and most experts say it's the best of the breed. It can hunt medium-sized game, or it can be used to hunt large prey such as bear. They also work with livestock. A natural hunter, breeders say they are often self-taught in hunting. The Cur can be a tough dog to hunt, but with his family, he is gentle, loyal and protective. They are also good with children. Its handler needs to be calm, confident and authoritative. Training should begin as soon as the puppy is brought home. He should not be trusted with smaller animals. It's not his intention to hurt other animals, it's his hunting instinct that makes him aggressive towards small non-dog animals. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is considered an extrovert dog who loves other people and animals. However, he thinks he's much bigger than he really is, and can sometimes challenge other dogs. He is alert and curious. He can be prone to barking, so training to stop barking on command should start at an early age. Most correctly socialized Spitz Toy / Pomeranian don't show the aggression mentioned above. This also helps small children, as some Poms are not good with children unless properly socialized. Given these characteristics, the Black Mouth Pom Cur should have a vibrant personality, however, it will need early socialization to get used to small children, people other than their family and other dogs. Because both parent breeds can be dominant, it's important to start training at an early age. The Black Mouth Pom Cur is a perfect blend of the two parent breeds, and can be expected to be curious, intelligent and alert.

Needs and activities of the Black Mouth Pom Cur

The Black Mouth Cur is a very active dog that is not generally suited to being indoors. It has lots of energy and loves to run and chase prey. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian is also a very active dog. Spitz Toy / Pomeranians need both mental and physical stimulation. For this reason, it's not unreasonable to believe that Black Mouth Pom Curs also need plenty of mental and physical stimulation. It's reasonable to assume that the Pom Cur is capable of staying indoors, however, it must have received enough exercise to be happy indoors. Make sure you have plenty of toys to stimulate his mind. Pulling games are great, as the Pom Cur will have to satisfy both the hunter in its Black Mouth Cur background and the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian sparkle. A walk is good for the Pom Cur, so take him to dog parks or let him run free outside if you have space for him.

Maintenance of the Black Mouth Pom Cur

The Black Mouth Cur has short hair and is generally very easy to care for. A weekly brushing with a soft brush or washcloth is sufficient for the Black Mouth Cur. The Spitz Toy / Pomeranian has long, silky hair that needs to be groomed regularly. What's more, Pomeranians are considered fairly heavy excretors. They are also known to shed their undercoat several times a year. Unspayed females shed most of their undercoat when in heat, having a litter or under stress. Experts recommend that owners brush their Pompons at least twice a week, using a slicker brush and metal comb. Because the Black Mouth Pom Cur is a hybrid breed, you can expect a mixture of characteristics from the parent breed. Most Black Mouth Pom Cur have longer coats and the undercoat of the Pom, so similar brushing requirements are normal. You should brush your Black Mouth Pom Cur's teeth at least three times a week and trim its nails every two weeks.
