A brief presentation of the Lacasapoo

The Lacasapoo is a cross between the Lhassa Apso and the Cockapoo. Hybrid dogs are small, reaching around 38 centimeters in height and weighing up to 11 kilos. The Lacasapoo is generally a cheerful, outgoing dog that will be affectionate towards its humans. Hybrids are loyal and protective of their people, and cautious when meeting strangers. The Lacasapoo is an intelligent dog eager to please. Maintenance will depend on the coat it inherits from its parents, although it is generally moderate.

History of the Lacasapoo

The hybrid known as Lacasapoo is a new breed of dog with no detailed history, although the two breeds that combine to create the breed have a long history.

A little of the Lhassa Apso

The Lhassa Apso was developed as a sentinel for temples and monasteries by Buddhist monks living in the Tibetan mountains. There are several beliefs about the birth of the breed. Some believe the dogs are descendants of Tibetan Terriers, while others think the breed may be influenced by dogs from the North. Examination of the breed's DNA indicates that the Lhassa Apso's ancestors are a type of mountain wolf. Bred to withstand the cold, the breed developed strong judgment to determine whether those approaching temples and monasteries were friend or foe. Although the dogs were never sold, the Dalai Lamas occasionally offered a pair as gifts to imperial families and visiting dignitaries. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935, having arrived in the USA in 1933.

A little of the Cockapoo

One of the oldest specific crossbreed dogs, the Cockapoo is a hybrid of the Poodle and the English Cocker Spaniel, having been bred in the 1960s. In 1999, the Cockapoo Club of America was formed and a breed standard was proposed. The American Cockapoo Club was formed in 2004.

Appearance of the Lacasapoo

A small dog, the Lacasapoo usually weighs up to 11 kilos. The Lacasapoo will have floppy ears and a dense coat ranging from short to long, with a texture ranging from wavy to curly. Colors seen in the hybrid include silver, white, black, brown, cream and brindle. Your Lacasapoo will get its individuality from the parent breeds; puppies from the same litter may vary in color and size as they grow. An expressive face will give your hybrid puppy a curious look that matches his playful personality.

Temperament of the Lacasapoo

The Lacasapoo is a lively, active dog. Because of their desire to please and their intellect, the Lacasapoo will be easy to train and will enjoy attracting your positive attention. Dogs of the breed will be protective of their humans and wary of strangers, barking to let you know their presence, as well as new animals, requiring socialization with other family pets. Obedience training is a good idea with any dog, and the Lacasapoo is no exception, thriving on attention. The Lacasapoo will do well with small children and wants to spend most of its time with its humans.

Needs and activities of the Lacasapoo

The Lacasapoo will enjoy a moderate amount of activity, which may include walks with its humans as well as playing outside at the dog park or with its family. Dogs of this breed have a good amount of energy and will appreciate opportunities to get that energy out. Because of its relatively small size, the Lacasapoo will be able to meet a large part of its activity needs by playing indoors and accompanying its family. An apartment or house will suit hybrid dogs, who won't need a large indoor space. A fenced-in yard is not necessary, but would give the hybrid a place to play and get fresh air when the weather's nice.

Maintenance of the Lacasapoo

A moderate amount of grooming and maintenance will be required for Lacasapoo. Lacasapoo's loss will depend on the type of coat it inherits. If the coat is more like that of a Poodle, for example, the loss will be minimal. Regular trimming or stripping at the groomer's may be necessary, and bathing should be done only when necessary to avoid damaging the natural oils in his skin. Lacasapoo's ears should be cleaned weekly with an ear cleaning solution, at which time you can also confirm that there is no infection present. Lacasapoo's teeth should be brushed several times a week to ensure long-term dental health.
