A brief presentation of the Mini Chisoxy

The Mini Chisoxy, or Taco Terrier as it's sometimes called, is a hybrid dog. Its parent breeds are the Miniature Fox Terrier and the Chihuahua. The Mini Chisoxy is a very small dog - in fact, it's considered the size of a toy. He's gentle, affectionate and highly intelligent. He's a little energetic and his antics will entertain you. He's a hypoallergenic dog, making him an excellent companion for allergy sufferers. He only barks occasionally, and can be somewhat wary of new people. However, he eventually warms up to them. He's great with children, especially with early socialization.

History of the Mini Chisoxy

The Mini Chisoxy is a fairly rare hybrid breed, so in order to understand its origins, we need to study the history of its parent breeds.

A little of the Miniature Fox Terrier

The Miniature Fox Terrier is one that can trace its ancestry back to England in the 1500s. The Fox Terrier was developed to find foxes in their dens and also to help chase them out. Surprisingly, the “runts” of Smooth Fox Terrier litters seemed to be more prized because they were feisty and seemed better at hunting rats and foxes. Nor were they afraid to defend their territory. At one time, Smooth Fox Terriers of all sizes were registered under the same breed. Today, especially after the introduction of smaller dogs to develop a toy-sized dog, the Miniature Fox Terrier is recognized as a breed in its own right.

A little of the Chihuahua

The Chihuahua has its roots in Central and South America. Most people associate the Chihuahua with Mexico, but the breed has its roots in the ancient empires of the Aztecs. A hairless dog similar to the Chihuahua was thought to have healing powers and was often placed in the beds of those who were ill. They were also used to keep people warm; the term “three-dog night” comes from this practice. The modern Chihuahua was first recognized in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. American visitors to the region brought the little dog to the United States, where the breed became one of America's most popular.

Appearance of the Mini Chisoxy

The Taco Terrier will be very small at maturity, weighing no more than 4.5 kilos. It will also measure no more than 25.5 centimeters in height. His coat is generally short and straight. It can come in a variety of colors, depending on the dominant parent breed: crimson, chocolate, black and tan, sable, drop, red, brindle, tricolor (spotted) and white. They have rather long ears that tend to stick out straight from their head. His tail will be straight and of medium length. His legs will be long for his small body, but muscular and sturdy. It will probably have a small, round head, often called an “apple head”.

Temperament of the Mini Chisoxy

The Mini Chisoxy is a gentle, intelligent and affectionate companion. He'll be loyal and protective of his family. He wants to be an active member of the family, so don't be surprised if he follows you from room to room, wanting to know what you're doing. He's an excellent watchdog and won't hesitate to let you know if something is wrong on his territory. Some Mini Chisoxies are considered couch potatoes, others have high energy levels. This will depend on the genetics of the dominant parent breed. While the Chihuahua parent breed is known to bond with a family member, the Mini Chisoxy is unlikely to do so. He loves everyone in his family and craves their attention. He may not do well separated from you for long periods, and dogs suffering from separation anxiety can be destructive. If you're away from home for long periods, this is something to consider when thinking about the Mini Chisoxy.

Needs and activities of the Mini Chisoxy

The Mini Chisoxy may be a live wire, or it may prefer to lounge on the sofa with you. Either way, he'll need daily activity to maintain his health. He loves to run and play outside, but he'll need to be in an enclosed space as he loves chasing small animals like squirrels. He'll also enjoy a game of fetch. Trips to the dog park are perfect for the Taco Terrier, and he'll also take long walks with you. The Mini Chisoxy will stay active for as long as you let him, but learn to watch for signs of fatigue. Never leave your Chisoxy unattended outdoors. Because it's so small, birds of prey like hawks will pick it up directly from your garden if you're not present. Make sure you don't over-exert the Chisoxy and, especially in hot weather, make sure it has plenty of water available.

Maintenance of the Mini Chisoxy

The Mini Chisoxy won't require much maintenance. You'll need to brush him once a week to keep his coat smooth and shiny. In spring and autumn, you may want to brush him two or three times a week to prevent hair from falling onto your clothes and furniture, as dogs tend to shed more during these seasons. Bathe him only when necessary. His natural oils will keep his coat healthy. Brush his teeth two or three times a week to combat tartar build-up and bad breath. However, as with many small dog breeds, the Taco Terrier can have dental problems, so daily brushing is recommended to prevent tooth decay and tooth loss. Trim his nails every two weeks unless they wear naturally. As a general rule, if you hear her nails clicking on the tiled floor, it's time to trim her nails.
