A brief presentation of the Mini Foxillon

Mini Foxillons are a cross between a Miniature Fox Terrier and a Continental Toy Spaniel. They can live up to 15 years and are known as energetic, intelligent and spirited pocket dogs. At maturity, Mini Foxillons generally weigh between 2.5 and 4 kilos and reach a height of 20.5 to 28 centimeters. They have big personalities and resemble Miniature Fox Terriers with a slightly longer coat. This breed has been bred for decades for its practical size and lively personality. Yet it is not fully stabilized or recognized by the American Kennel Club's (AKC) list of purebred dogs.

History of the Mini Foxillon

The Mini Foxillon takes its name from its parent breeds: the Miniature Fox Terrier and the Continental Toy Spaniel. The product of these two breeds, the Mini Foxillon, is thought to have originated in the early to mid-1900s, when both parent breeds were present and popular in the United States. Mini Foxillons were probably bred for the friendly disposition of the Continental Toy Spaniel and the intelligence of the Miniature Fox Terrier. Although not recognized by the AKC, this hybrid is fairly established among designer breeds. Nevertheless, its temperament and appearance can vary considerably, and breeders should be thoroughly researched if you're considering buying a puppy from them.

A little of the Miniature Fox Terrier

The Miniature Fox Terrier, originated in the USA in the early 1900s and is descended from the Smooth Fox Terrier and other toy breeds, including the Italian Greyhound, Toy Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher and Chihuahua. It was originally bred to hunt small vermin, however, due to its size, intelligence and energy, Miniature Fox Terriers became common performance animals in shows and circuses during the 20th century. The breed was officially recognized as a toy group by the AKC in 2003.

A little of the Continental Toy Spaniel

The Continental Toy Spaniel is an ancient breed that originated over 700 years ago in France, and was very popular with European royalty and the elite. Continental Toy Spaniels can even be identified in Italian frescoes and paintings as far back as the 13th century. Interestingly, this breed originally had pendulous ears. Over time, however, it developed the erect ears we know today. In fact, many litters still produce puppies with both types of ears. Continental Toy Spaniels became popular in North America in the early 20th century, and the AKC recognized the breed in 1915.

Appearance of the Mini Foxillon

A Mini Foxillon is a small, well-balanced dog that inherits the physical characteristics of both its parent breeds. It generally weighs between 2.5 and 4 kilos and reaches a height of 20.5 to 28 centimeters. The most striking feature of this breed is its erect bat ears, set high on its small head. Mini Foxillons also have dark, round eyes and a black or brown nose. Their delicate muzzles are tapered and complemented by a clean scissor bite. This breed comes in multicolored combinations of black, white, red and fawn, with a sable pattern possible. Mini Foxillons tend to have short to medium-length coats, straight and silky to the touch. If the dog resembles the Continental Toy Spaniel parent, it may have light feathering around the ears, feet, legs and belly.

Temperament of the Mini Foxillon

Mini Foxillons are recognized as wonderful family companions. They are alert, intelligent and playful animals that demand a lot of attention. They love learning tricks, playing games like fetch with their owners and playing with toys of all kinds. It follows that restless or neglected Mini Foxillons are likely to become barky, whiny or destructive in the home. As far as other animals and children are concerned, Mini Foxillons are not the friendliest of creatures. However, this breed can learn to be approachable with early and consistent socialization. Beyond that, Mini Foxillons are very loyal and eager to please their owners. As a result, they are fairly easy to train and enjoy being showered with praise and attention for good behavior. In fact, because this breed is so people-oriented, they do best in stable homes where they have constant company and daily activities. Overall, these courageous pets thrive in structured environments where play and praise are high priorities.

Needs and activities of the Mini Foxillon

The Mini Foxillon is an athletic breed that requires moderate daily exercise that equates to around 20 to 45 minutes of activity per day. They can enjoy a walk, a trip to the dog park depending on their temperament, and/or a game of fetch with their owners. They are fast, agile runners with a tendency to roam and chase, so owners should not leave Mini Foxillons unsupervised when outdoors or in unfenced areas. Otherwise, Mini Foxillons do well in all types of climates and environments. In fact, they are particularly suited to urban and/or apartment living as long as they receive sufficient human attention. Mini Foxillons are really happiest when they get a good dose of bonding time with their owners, whatever the activity.

Maintenance of the Mini Foxillon

Mini Foxillons are not a hypoallergenic breed and are therefore not suitable for owners of pets with allergies. Their silky coat varies from short to medium, sheds moderately and requires occasional grooming with a blade or smoother brush. If your Mini Foxillon's coat is particularly long, owners can trim the feathered parts around the eyes, ears and legs to avoid infections or impediments to mobility. This breed requires a monthly bath in which the ears and eyes are meticulously cleaned. Like all breeds, Mini Foxillons must also have their teeth cleaned daily to prevent plaque build-up and other dental diseases.
