A brief presentation of the Pekalier

The Pekalier is a wonderful pet, combining the gentle, confident temperament of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the loyalty and devotion of the Pekingese. They enjoy the company of adults and can be somewhat intolerant of small, boisterous children. Small and short-limbed, the Pekalier will never be a pocket-sized model. While some find their large chestnut eyes endearing, others are not so complementary. Their soft fur is of medium length and often features a small wave. This characteristic is particularly noticeable on their long ears, which can be puckered or curled.

History of the Pekalier

The Pekalier is a recent arrival on the hybrid scene and is thought to have been developed in the USA around 20-30 years ago. The specific crossbreed dog movement really took off around this time, with breeders eager to explore new breed combinations in search of the most desirable animal.

A little of the Pekingese

The Pekingese, known in its Chinese homeland as the Lion Dog, was developed by Chinese royalty as a valuable companion. This breed has many contradictory characteristics, for although it is a very small dog of miniaturized breed, it is stocky and muscular, and displays a sometimes reckless courage when defending itself or its owners from any real or imagined threat. Pekingese may not be suitable for households with other pets, as they often dislike the company of other animals, with the exception of other Pekingese.

A little of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, or simply the Cavie, is best known for two things. One is their beautiful temperament, as they are incredibly tolerant of young children and make loving, devoted pets. Unfortunately, the other thing they're known for is their appalling health record. Scars are prone to a number of major genetic health problems, including syringomyelia and mitral valve disease, both of which can significantly reduce their quality of life and lifespan.

Appearance of the Pekalier

Pekaliers are rather unusual in appearance, with their domed skull, protruding eyes, shortened muzzle and stubby limbs. Although not classically handsome, they do possess a certain charm. Their round, dark-brown eyes are their main facial feature. Their short muzzle ends in a dark nose, often quite small. Their ears are long and flowing, sitting on the side of the head. Their body is long and close to the ground, supported by fleshy legs. Their tail is of medium length and can curl at the tip. The Pekalier is a small breed, weighing between 4 and 8 kilos and measuring between 15 and 25 centimeters. The Pekalier's coat is of medium length and may be wavy or slightly curly, with longer fur on the ears, tail and feathering on the underside of the limbs. Although coat colors are uniform, most individuals are either cream and white, brown and white or black and white. They can have a variety of attractive markings and may have large colored spots, markings and stripes.

Temperament of the Pekalier

The truth is that Pekingese and Cavaliers have very different personalities, which means that predicting the Pekalier's temperament can be quite tricky. Although these dogs can be good-natured and relaxed, some may inherit the more dominant traits of the Pekingese. With firm, consistent training, most can learn to live harmoniously within the family. It is generally not recommended for people with very young children to take on a Pekalier. This is not only because they can be lively and intolerant, but also because they are quite small and delicate, making injury more likely. Good socialization from an early age is the best way to integrate the Pekalier with all household children and other pets.

Needs and activities of the Pekalier

The Pekalier is not an overly active dog. He will need only a minimum of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. A short walk with you once or twice a day is enough. However, both you and the Pekalier will enjoy trips to the dog park. Remember that the Pekalier can be brachycephalic. This means he should never be overheated or overworked. Keep water nearby during exercise. The Pekalier will also benefit from playtime in a fenced-in area. With a dog as small as the Pekalier, it's important to give him multiple short activities to keep him healthy. He's not prone to separation anxiety, but taking him for short walks around the neighborhood will keep him active and healthy for many years to come.

Maintenance of the Pekalier

The Pekalier will require moderate maintenance. Its hair is likely to be long and silky. He'll need daily brushing to keep his coat clean and healthy. Brush your dog's teeth two or three times a week to prevent tartar build-up. Frequent brushing also prevents bad breath. The Pekalier's ears deserve special attention. Use a washcloth soaked in lukewarm water to wipe his ears every week. Look for any redness or bad odor, as this indicates an infection. Clip her nails every two to three weeks. As a general rule, listen when he walks on a tiled floor. If you hear his nails clicking on the floor, it's time to trim them.
