The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier is a hybrid mix by design. It is a gentle combination of its two parent breeds, the Wire Fox Terrier and the Rat Terrier. As an adult, he measures between 28 and 48 centimeters at the withers and weighs between 4.5 and 11 kilos. Its small size makes it an excellent choice for an apartment or small house. History of the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier |

A little of the Wire Fox Terrier |
||
The Wire Fox Terrier is an ancient breed with origins in England. This dog is thought to be a descendant of the now extinct Wirehaired Working Terrier, which was widespread in Wales, Durham and Derbyshire. The Fox Terrier Wire was bred to be an intrepid hunter and to pursue a fox into its den without hesitation. The dog's short, sturdy docked tail served as a handle for the hunter. The hunter would descend into the den and pull the dog by the tail to finish off the fox. The American Kennel Club first recognized the Fox Terrier Wirehaired in 1885, but it was grouped with the Fox Terrier Smooth and they were considered the same breed. It wasn't until 1984 that the American Kennel Club officially separated the two breeds. The Wire Fox Terrier was placed in the AKC Terrier group. | ||

A little of the Rat Terrier |
The Rat Terrier was bred for speed. His quick reactions made him a superior ratter. It was often used on ships to control rodent populations. It is thought that British immigrants brought these little dogs to America, where they quickly gained in popularity. They became the preferred pet of farmers throughout the United States, as they helped control vermin. Today, police departments use small dogs to search for contraband, as they have a keen sense of smell and are highly intelligent, enabling them to learn quickly. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Rat Terrier in 2010 and included it in the miscellaneous dog group. |
Presentation of the Rat Terrier |
Appearance of the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier |
The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier is a scruffy little fellow. His hair stands up stringy all over his body. He has a generally scruffy appearance that makes him adorable to look at. His ears generally stand up straight and turn down at the tips. The tail rises over the back and is slightly curved. Some breeders dock their puppies' tails before selling them, if permitted. His eyes and nose are generally black, contrasting sharply with his coat. It moves with a determined, lively gait. |
Temperament of the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier |
Like its parents, the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier has a strong propensity for hunting. They love to hunt, so great care must be taken with small pets. Owners should always keep their dog on a leash, as this little pistol will take off in the blink of an eye in pursuit of a squirrel or other small rodent. He's a smart little guy and a lot of fun for kids. This active little dog loves to go for walks and play. He also enjoys relaxing and will snuggle up on his owner's lap for some well-deserved cuddles. He can be a little barky if he hears a noise or sees a stranger. Thanks to his high intelligence, he's easy to train for general obedience, and easier to train than most small dogs. |
Needs and activities of the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier |
The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier loves to go for walks. He's an alert little dog who takes note of everything going on around him. Ideally, you should take him for a walk at least once a day. He loves to play outside in a fenced-in yard, but you need to keep a close eye on him as he can be a busybody in his hunt for vermin. Indoors, give him plenty of toys to keep him busy and happy. As a puppy, he has a tendency to chew, so give him plenty to chew on so he doesn't gnaw on your shoes. |
Maintenance of the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier |
The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier's short coat is easy to care for. Give him a quick brushing once a week to remove loose hairs and keep his coat shiny. Once a month, you can give him a bath to eliminate any doggy smell. Like many small dogs, he can suffer from gum disease. So start brushing his teeth several times a week to remove any plaque build-up and prevent periodontal disease later in life. His little ears need a quick cleaning once a week to remove any build-up of earwax or dirt. You should regularly check the length of your baby's nails, which can become a nuisance if they are too long. |
