| Anatolian Pyrenees are a cross between the Kangal Sheepdog and the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Both breeds were primarily used as livestock guardians, so the Anatolian Pyrenees can also be considered a great guardian for both family and livestock. The Anatolian Pyrenees is a gentle giant that's great with children. The Kangal Sheepdog originates from Turkey and the Pyrenean Mountain Dog from the Pyrenees. Anatolian Pyrenees are generally cream-colored with brown or black markings. Anatolian Pyrenees are above-average excretors and are sometimes considered high-maintenance for this reason. |
History of the Anatolian Pyrenees |
| The Anatolian Pyrenees is a gentle giant that's great with children. The breeds were mixed due to their similarities, both being large sheepdogs. Owners of the mixed breed usually own farms and use the hybrid dogs to herd livestock. |

| The question we need to ask ourselves about the origins of the Kangal as we know it today is what led to the emergence in Turkey of a more homogenous standard in terms of type and, above all, color. The answer may lie in a region of eastern Turkey where the Kangal is strongly represented, and in the breed of sheep these dogs protect and are known for: the Akkaraman sheep. Both come from the vast steppes of eastern Turkey, where, surrounded by imposing mountains, they multiplied, forming a relatively isolated population. Both the Kangal and the Akkaraman sheep are likely to have developed their camouflage and adaptation skills. The breed's name derives from the town of Kangal, not far from Sivas, where exceptional, uniform specimens have attracted the attention of enthusiasts from all over the world. | ||

| Anatolian Pyrenees are a blend of two breeds that are biologically quite similar. Pyrenean Mountain Dogs are generally white or cream with long hair, while the Kangal Sheepdog has a short coat with longer hair around the ears, legs and tail. The Kangal Sheepdog is a combination of colors, usually fawn, white, pinto or brindle. They often have black mask markings. Anatolian Pyrenees can be a combination of colors, but will have semi-long hair. This is not a waterproof coat. |

| The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a very mellow dog and can adapt to any situation. They are gentle, loyal and affectionate. The Kangal Sheepdog is very protective of its family. They are very intelligent and can sometimes be dominant. Expect Anatolian Pyrenees to be a mix of both personalities. Both are great with children, however, early socialization is essential to ensure that Anatolian Pyrenees are accustomed to children, other pets and a variety of people. They are not, however, good dogs for novice dog owners. Patience is required to train this dog. |

The parent breed is quite an equestrian. Pyrenean Mountain Dogs are also known as "Houdini Hounds", so get ready for your Anatolian Pyrenees to be an escape artist. Anatolian Pyrenees need a fair amount of daily activity. Make sure not only to take him out for exercise, but also to stimulate him mentally - fetch games won't do for this highly intelligent hybrid dog. It's also worth noting that the Anatolian Pyrenees can be aggressive when defending its turf, whether against another dog or strangers. Always keep him on a leash when walking. |
