A brief presentation of the Boston Lab

The Boston Lab combines the best features of the Labrador Retriever and the Boston Terrier. It's a medium-sized dog, smaller than the Labrador Retriever but larger than the Boston Terrier. These dogs have playful, happy personalities and are affectionate and loyal. They'll listen carefully to what you say, although they don't always obey. The Boston Lab is eager to please and will respond well to training, enjoying attention and the chance to make you happy. They're active when they're young, participating in games and will be the first at the door waiting for you to walk them. The Boston Lab is good with children, participates in their games and shows patience. They are inclined to want to be with the family at all times and get lonely if left alone for too long. Boston Lab dogs are very active and easy to socialize.

History of the Boston Lab

The Boston Lab is a hybrid breed created by crossing the Boston Terrier with the Labrador Retriever. Boston Labs are highly alert, intelligent and responsive dogs, known for their playful and loyal nature. The combination of the two parent dogs has created the Boston Lab, a specific crossbreed dog that is fast becoming as popular as its parent breeds. The Boston Lab's protective, loving nature, patience, loyalty and affection make it an ideal companion dog.

A little of the Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers were bred in the early 19th century as fighting dogs. They were larger at the time and over time, once dog fighting was outlawed, they were bred to be small and more gentle in temperament. They are popular because of their tuxedo style and affectionate nature. They are small in stature, weighing up to 11.5 kilos, and have a stocky, robust appearance. They are one of 10 American-made breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club.

A little of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever came to the USA from Canada and quickly became one of the most popular dog breeds. They have a superb nature, are affectionate, easy to train, loyal and very good with family members, even the very young. The Labrador Retriever was originally bred as a retriever for hunters. They have good judgment and are known for their soft mouth, which means they retrieve their prey without causing injury.

Appearance of the Boston Lab

The Boston Lab is a miniature to medium-sized dog. Their body is short and stocky and in good proportion to their head. The breed has a longer muzzle than the Boston Terrier, with scissors or even a bite. Ears can be soft like a Labrador or short and erect with a soft tip like the Boston Terrier. A black nose and smiling face are characteristic of this breed, and they can have a quizzical look when they raise their eyebrows. The eyes are golden to dark brown and very expressive. The legs are straight and strong, with rounded paws. The Boston Lab has a medium-sized tail, held low to medium away from their body. Their short, velvety coat of silky fur, available in many colors, completes the picture of an attractive dog with an equally attractive nature.

Temperament of the Boston Lab

The Boston Lab is described as a happy dog. They always seem to have enough energy for everything and enjoy being part of family life and daily outings. They can get lonely if you ignore them and get it wrong. The Boston Lab sees itself as part of your group, and they like a strong but fair group leader. Results are achieved through praise and rewards rather than hard, strict methods. They learn quickly and respond well to kind words and tone of voice. Start their training at a young age, as they tend to lose interest as they mature. Make sure they get used to socializing with children, people, dogs and other pets while they're young. It will make life easier for you if they form friendly bonds early in life. These dogs are very playful, but just as attentive when you're relaxed or not well, they'll listen to all your problems with attentive, adoring eyes and ears.

Needs and activities of the Boston Lab

This unique breed will do best with regular daily exercise; a daily walk of an hour or so combined with play at home will keep the Boston Lab fit and healthy. They can live happily in an apartment if they exercise every day and discover a little. They don't like extreme temperatures and do best in moderate climates. The Labrador Retriever side of their breed loves water, so it's safe to assume that the Boston Lab will enjoy splashing in the water, especially in summer. Games that will keep them entertained for hours include fetch, tug-of-war and hide-and-seek. The Boston Lab loves to please and is a true family dog. Make sure he's included in family outings. Use a leash when out and about, as the Boston Lab can practice selective deafness if he's free to explore. Other requirements include a good walk every day and fun games where they can chase a ball until they get tired, which rarely happens, to burn off their energy.

Maintenance of the Boston Lab

The Boston Lab is very easy to maintain and is low-maintenance for the owner. Once a week, a quick brushing with a firm bristle brush is all that's needed, or perhaps a loving rub with a soft, damp cloth will make the coat shine. These dogs love attention, so get them used to a weekly grooming ritual where you brush them, check their nails and nippers if they're too long, and check the inside of the ears - a soft, damp cloth wiped gently inside will remove any build-up of dirt and debris. While your dog is a puppy, get him used to brushing his teeth, then reward him for good behavior. This practice eliminates any grooming problems at maturity.
