A brief presentation of the Mini Australian Shepterrier

The Mini Australian Shepterrier is a specific cross between the Australian Terrier and the Miniature American Shepherd. These breeds are small to medium-sized and always seem to have long coats of fur that can be stiff or straight. As these are new designer breeds, the exact history of this hybrid remains unclear. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the hybrid may have originated in the USA due to its recognition with many American clubs. The Mini Australian Shepterrier is a very energetic dog, best suited to active households.

History of the Mini Australian Shepterrier

The Mini Australian Shepterrier is a new hybrid that has only recently become popular. As such, the history of the Mini Australian Shepterrier is not yet in the history books, so turning to the parents will be the best way to familiarize yourself with your new pet. The Mini Australian Shepterrier is currently recognized only by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and the Dog Registry of America. Based on their area of recognition, we can assume that these designer breeds probably originated in the U.S.A. within the last decade.

A little of the Miniature American Shepherd

The intelligent Miniature American Shepherd is a relatively new breed that was founded in the 1960s in California. This breed appears to have been created by crossing the Australian Shepherd with various other small-breed dogs, resulting in a small, miniature version of an Australian Shepherd. As this breed shares common ancestry with the Basque Shepherd and the Australian Shepherd, they are widely recognized as excellent sheepdogs. The Australian Shepherd originated in the United States during the Gold Rush. The Australian Shepherd Club of America was formed in 1957, and the breed joined the American Kennel Club in 1993.

A little of the Australian Terrier

Despite its small size, the Australian Terrier was considered a courageous little dog that would have originated in Tasmania. These plucky little dogs date back to the 1800s and share common ancestry with the Dandie Dinmont, Skye Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Manchester Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier. Owners will certainly see that their hybrid will have a strong desire to please their owners by breeding or hunting small vermin just like their parent breeds, while being a loyal companion.

Appearance of the Mini Australian Shepterrier

The Mini Australian Shepterrier is a small to medium-sized dog that can often be very robust in appearance. These hybrids have coats that can be stiff or straight, and can be hard to the touch. Their muzzles are medium to long, and their ears are set high on the head but are semi-folded down. Their eyes are often brown and almond-shaped, but can be other colors such as blue, hazel or even amber. These hybrids tend to have long bodies and short legs. They can often be described as having lean, muscular bodies and strong fore and hind legs.

Temperament of the Mini Australian Shepterrier

Loyal and easy to train, Mini Australian Shepterriers are affectionate companions that do well in homes with children. Because of their breeding and high prey count, this breed may not be suitable for households with other, smaller pets. When meeting a new face, your hybrid may bark a lot to alert you to the presence of a stranger. These puppies are extremely alert and make excellent watchdogs for this reason, although they very rarely show aggression towards people. Nevertheless, the Mini Australian Shepterrier is one of the easiest dogs to train who loves to learn. Training these puppies at a young age will enable them to be better socialized and tolerant of people and other pets.

Needs and activities of the Mini Australian Shepterrier

The Mini Australian Shepterrier is a small, high-energy breed that will require a minimum of 90 minutes of daily physical activity. They are often quite adaptable breeds and can therefore cope well in urban, rural or suburban environments. These hybrids can have a large prey drive, a trait retained from their Terrier nature. They will enjoy activities that offer them mental stimulation, these include various games such as searching and herding. They can be very sociable, so will love visits to dog parks. Due to their constant need to be on the move, owning a Mini Australian Shepterrier can be hard work and they are best suited to owners with an active lifestyle.

Maintenance of the Mini Australian Shepterrier

An average maintenance dog, the Mini Australian Shepterrier doesn't need much grooming. They can be seasonal shedders, but if they keep their Terrier coat, shedding is often infrequent. During the summer months, these hybrids may shed more often and will therefore require weekly detangling to remove loose fur. These hybrids are not prone to matting and may only need brushing once a week. As for bathing, these dogs can get away with a few baths throughout the year. Over-bathing your hybrid can lead to dry skin, causing a variety of skin problems. Teeth should be cleaned weekly to prevent dental disease, ears should be monitored and cleaned to prevent ear infections, and nails should be trimmed if not worn.
