A brief presentation of the Mini Foxy Russell |
The Mini Foxy Russell is a specific cross between two purebred dogs, the Miniature Fox Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier. The Mini Foxy Russell is the classic definition of a Terrier, very active and courageous. The Mini Foxy Russell is recognized by five different dog registries and competition associations. Despite the recognition, little is known about the Mini Foxy Russell, which may also be known as the Foxy Russell. The Mini Foxy Russell can also vary in appearance, as there are no established standards for the hybrid. Families who have this exuberant dog in their homes say that although he can be stubborn, there's never a dull moment. |
History of the Mini Foxy Russell |
The Mini Foxy Russell is a designer hybrid between the Jack Russell Terrier and the Miniature Fox Terrier. The resulting hybrid is remarkably healthy and unmistakably Terrier. The very active dog is an excellent match for an equally active family, but needs his space to run, jump and play. The designer dog's parent breeds are the Jack Russell Terrier, known as the Parson Russell Terrier, and the Miniature Fox Terrier. The two parent breeds are closely related, since the Jack Russell Terrier split from the Fox Terrier in the 1800s. Because the parents are so closely related, Mini Foxy Russell owners can review the respective histories and character traits of both parents to better understand their hybrid dog. Both parent breeds have close ties to the Fox Terriers of England, and have only deviated from their alpha breed in the last 200 years. The Mini Foxy Russell will display traits of both parent breeds, but the hybrid is more predictable than most due to its parents' lineage. |
A little of the Miniature Fox Terrier |
||
The Miniature Fox Terrier is an American Terrier developed from the Smooth Fox Terrier of England. Fans of the Smooth Fox Terrier wanted a smaller version, and the breed was crossed with various small Terrier-type dogs, including the Manchester Terrier and Chihuahua, to achieve the desired stature. The Miniature Fox Terrier was also bred as a companion, and less independent-minded traits were selected to achieve the right balance between a high-energy Terrier and that of a lap-loving companion. The American Kennel Club recently recognized the breed in 2003, although the appearance and desired traits of the Miniature Fox Terrier were established in the 1930s.

A little of the Jack Russell Terrier |
||
The Jack Russell Terrier is an intelligent little Terrier with lots of energy. Parson John Russell developed the breed in England 200 years ago as a small fox-hunting Terrier. Russell lent his two names to the new dog, which is called the Parson Russell Terrier, but more commonly known as the Jack Russell Terrier. As a land dog, the Jack Russell Terrier's job was to dig foxes out of their dens so the dogs could hunt them. However, Russell also wanted a Terrier-type dog that he could bring indoors and that could settle in if properly trained. The Jack Russell Terrier quickly became a favorite among sportsmen and small dogs in England and the USA. There may be slight variations in the standards of Jack Russell Terriers, particularly with regard to the size of the dog, but on the whole, the personality of the Jack Russell remains the same.

Appearance of the Mini Foxy Russell |
The Mini Foxy Russell is a small hybrid with a sturdy square frame. Legs are medium-length and straight, with well-defined muscles. The coat of the Mini Foxy Russell is predominantly white, although other color variations are known and usually include colored spots of red and black on its face and ears. The coat can vary depending on which parent breed the hybrid most closely resembles, but is generally smooth and flat. Short, stiff hair, similar to the Jack Russell parent, may adorn the legs or face. The Mini Foxy Russell's head is small and round, with a long, tapering muzzle and black nose. Large, round, dark-brown or black eyes are prominent and set high on the head. The Mini Foxy Russell's tail is carried high and short. |
Temperament of the Mini Foxy Russell |
The Mini Foxy Russell is an excitable dog with high energy levels and is not suitable for novice dog owners. They tend to be excellent alarm barkers and bark at strangers, however, if they don't feel threatened, the Mini Foxy Russell quickly adapts to strangers. It's an excellent family dog for active households, but not suitable for young children who may tease them, as this hybrid can be lively. The Fox Terrier parent helps to equalize some of the Terrier's qualities, including stubbornness and independence. This hybrid may not always get along with other dogs and especially with small pets, such as cats or hamsters. Small animals will excite the spirit of prey, however, with appropriate socialization at an early age, it is possible for a Mini Foxy Russell to live in harmony with other pets, but supervision is always suggested. |
Needs and activities of the Mini Foxy Russell |
The Mini Foxy Russell is a high-energy dog in a compact size. They love to run, jump and dig. Their energy requirements and high intelligence mean they need daily exercise that works both body and mind. Fenced backyards are ideal for this hybrid, but the yard must be secured with a sufficiently high fence. The Mini Foxy Russell is known for jumping very high and digging escape routes. Supervised playtime is preferred and will give an owner the opportunity to bond with the Mini Foxy Russell. The Mini Foxy Russell has no climate preference but does best in temperate environments. However, the hybrid should not be left alone outdoors for extended periods. This hybrid is not the best choice for apartment living due to its high energy and exercise requirements, but it can adapt. |
Maintenance of the Mini Foxy Russell |
Maintaining the Mini Foxy Russell's coat is easy, with weekly brushing. The hybrid is not a hypoallergenic dog and will shed moderately. Weekly brushing with a medium bristle or pin brush will help reduce the amount of loose, dead hair. Check your dog's ears for any build-up during brushing, and remove it with a vet-approved solution or pet wipes if necessary. Instead of bathing the Mini Foxy Russell, use pet wipes to clean its coat. Mini Foxy Russell has sensitive skin, and frequent bathing can irritate or inflame it. The Mini Foxy Russell is not known for drooling and generally has no doggy odor. However, if you detect a foul odor, check for dirt or build-up in his ears and on his skin for any problems. |
