A brief presentation of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier

The Mini Foxy Rat Terrier is a specific cross between two very similar small dogs. The Rat Terrier and Miniature Fox Terrier are both small and easy to care for, with loyal, intelligent characteristics. Only a minimum of maintenance is required to keep these dogs looking their best, and they are easy to train and easy to live with. They get on well with all people and pets, and are equally at home in any environment. These little dogs are very healthy and have a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years. These cute dogs are sure to make an impression on your life and bring you years of happiness and pleasure.

History of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier

Designer dogs are part of a fairly new trend that began a few decades ago. There often isn't much documentation on these dogs, and for this reason we have to turn to the information available on the parent breeds to make an accurate guess at what the babies will look and act like. The Mini Foxy Rat Terrier is the result of a cross between a Rat Terrier and a Miniature Fox Terrier.

A little of the Miniature Fox Terrier

Miniature Fox Terriers came from Australia in the 1800s, although their descendants are Fox Terrier types originally from England. The first settlers were the ones who brought these dogs to Australia, where the little Smooth Fox Terriers were bred with Manchester Terriers. The offspring of this combination were eventually crossed with Whippets, English Toy Terriers and Italian Greyhounds. The aim was to create a smaller version of the Fox Terrier, while retaining the characteristics that made them so adept at hunting. They eventually developed a small dog that would be used to hunt smaller prey, such as rodents and rabbits. As such, it was only recently recognized as a pure breed by the American Kennel Club in 2003.

A little of the Rat Terrier

The Rat Terrier was actually named by Teddy Roosevelt and originated in Great Britain. The first Rat Terriers were created in 1820 by crossing a Smooth Fox Terrier and a Manchester Terrier. The breed first appeared in the USA in the 1890s, when the only color combinations available were black and tan. Eventually, American breeders again mixed these dogs with Smooth Fox Terriers, Beagles and Whippets. The new breeds that were introduced brought new traits and colors to the dog. The Beagle added hunting and fleeing skills, made the dogs bulkier and gave access to the red color gene. Blue and brindle colors were available from the Whippet, along with increased speed and agility.

Appearance of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier

To determine what your Mini Foxy Rat Terrier puppy will look like, you need to take a look at the parents. Rat Terriers are strong, muscular dogs with deep chests and strong necks. They have powerful legs and strong shoulders. Although their bodies are small and compact, they are thick and solid. These dogs will have tilted or erect ears, which become erect when the dog is alert. Tails are naturally long or short, although some long tails are docked. Miniature Fox Terriers are small, agile dogs with gentle faces. They have noble heads with erect ears that bend slightly at the tips or stand straight. They have oval-shaped paws that are highly distinctive and jointed. This breed's tails can also be left natural or docked, although some dogs are born with natural bobtails.

Temperament of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier

For the appearance of these dogs, we've looked at the characteristics of both parents, and the same will be true for personality. Rat Terriers are intelligent and alert, and also very affectionate. They love to learn and aspire to please their owners, which makes them easy to train. This breed is lively and spirited, and make excellent pets for active owners. This friendly dog does well with children, especially if raised with them. They are also known to be good with strangers, for the most part, but still make excellent watchdogs. The loyal and fearless Miniature Fox Terrier may seem gentle and calm at first, which it is, but at the first sign of danger, it becomes the perfect protective watchdog. They are well suited to households with children, as long as the younger ones understand how to treat a dog. Other pets pose no problem for the Miniature Fox Terrier, although small animals such as rodents and reptiles should be wary, as these dogs have been bred for hunting.

Needs and activities of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier

The Mini Foxy Rat Terrier will enjoy activities similar to those of its parents. Most of these hybrid dogs will enjoy swimming, running and playing constantly with their owners. They'll love to play inside and outside the house, and should be given mind games to keep them busy and exercise all their senses. For a dog with moderate exercise needs, 30 to 40 minutes a day may be enough. However, if the opportunity arises, chances are this dog is ready to get out and explore every chance he gets.

Maintenance of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier

Coat care for hybrid dogs will depend on the parent they inherit. In the case of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier, coat care should be fairly easy and very straightforward. They'll only need to be brushed occasionally with a brush and comb, and don't need regular baths unless they're dirty. Clean your Mini Foxy Rat Terrier's ears weekly with a damp cloth. This will reduce the risk of unwanted ear infections. Your dog's teeth also need to be cared for to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Brush his teeth every day if you can, or at least two or three times a week. Finally, your dog will need monthly nail trimming. Although the exact frequency varies from dog to dog, as some have a more active lifestyle and wear out their nails more often, once or twice a month should suffice for most breeds.
