A brief presentation of the Papiox

The Papiox is a specific hybrid cross between the purebred Toy Fox Terrier and the purebred Continental Toy Spaniel. Both parents are the size of a toy, and the resulting mix is just as small. As small dogs, owners can expect the Papiox to be an excellent companion who needs plenty of attention and affection. However, Terrier bloodlines add a certain independence and energy to the Papiox. Papiox is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Registry of America and the International Designer Canine Registry. The Papiox may also be known as the Toy Foxillon or simply the Foxillon.

History of the Papiox

The Papiox is a designer breed of two purebred dogs, the Toy Fox Terrier and the Continental Toy Spaniel, and has no documented history, so it's not known when the intentional breeding of these two dogs first took place. What's more, details of the breed's traits and standards have yet to be formed. Owners wishing to better understand their Papiox, or Foxillon as some are called, can review the histories and dispositions of the parent breeds.

A little of the Continental Toy Spaniel

The Continental Toy Spaniel is a much older dog with roots dating back to the 16th century. The little Spaniel was a favorite in Spanish courts and particularly in French courts, from which the dog takes its name. Papillon is a reference to the butterfly and is a marked characteristic of breeds whose ears resemble wings. A variation of the Papillon's drooping ear exists, called the Phalène, but it is extremely rare. The name Phalène is also a French reference to the breed's ears, which rest like those of a moth. Today, the Continental Toy Spaniel enjoys a high ranking from the American Kennel Club, and was first recognized by the AKC in 1915.

A little of the Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier was bred in America from the Smooth Fox Terrier of England. The Toy Fox Terrier's first role followed its ancestors as a vermin control dog, but Americans wanted a smaller dog that could fit into smaller spaces in farm barns as well as a good companion for inside the home. Several small breeds, including perhaps the Continental Toy Spaniel and the Chihuahua, were crossed with the Fox Terrier to achieve this goal. The resulting dog was part Toy, part Terrier, and perfectly suited to the dual role. The American Kennel Club didn't recognize the Toy Fox Terrier, sometimes called the TFT, until 2003.

Appearance of the Papiox

The Papiox's head is proportional to its body, with a slender, tapering muzzle and medium-sized, round, dark eyes set wide apart. The ears are large for the Papiox's size and stand upright in the shape of a triangle. The coat can be short to medium-length, with longer hair on the head, ears, legs and tail. The tail is erect and may curl over the back if the Papiox resembles the Continental Toy Spaniel. The Papiox's body is compact and appears delicately boned, but it is also well muscled under mostly white hair with patches of color.

Temperament of the Papiox

The Papiox is a cheerful, energetic hybrid that loves its family and doesn't like to be left alone. Their small size may make them vulnerable to accidents with young children, but otherwise Papiox are at home with children. Papiox do very well with older children indoors and out, and are cheerful with new people. The Toy Fox Terrier parent can make the Papiox slightly aloof with strangers, but the hybrid warms up quickly to non-threatening people. The Papiox has a great deal of energy and is a playful dog, but its size makes it easy to follow during exercise and recreation. Despite their toy size, Papioxes are easy to train, but the Toy Fox Terrier's independent stripes can make further instruction more difficult.

Needs and activities of the Papiox

The Papiox is a high-energy hybrid in a compact, toy-sized body. The mix loves to run and jump, and can leap relatively high off the ground when standing. However, Papiox's small size makes exercise easy, and although the intensity is medium, the duration doesn't need to be great. A few daily runs in the garden or jumps indoors are all this hybrid needs to expel excess energy and meet its daily activity requirements. Papiox has a higher tolerance for warmer climates than for colder ones, but this hybrid should not be left alone outdoors. Papiox is equally at home in apartments and cities, and in the countryside.

Maintenance of the Papiox

Papiox maintenance is easy, but this hybrid is not a hypoallergenic dog. Papiox is a moderate shedder, and weekly brushing will help remove dead or loose hair. The hair around the ears and head is generally longer and can catch dirt or mat. Be careful when grooming the Papiox head and check your dog's ears for any dirt or debris that may be trapped in the ears. Papiox does not require frequent bathing, and a warm, damp washcloth, pet wipe or spray bottle helps to clean the coat thoroughly during grooming. Papiox is not known for drooling and has no doggy odor.
