This dog is gentle with children and affectionate. It also mixes well with other pets. Make sure your dog is well socialized when he's young, and he'll become a well-balanced companion. The Rott Pei is an attractive dog, inheriting the beauty of both its parents, the Rottweiler and the Shar Pei. He may seem aloof with strangers until he gets to know them. Relaxed and self-assured, the Rott Pei is a confident dog that responds well to training and is easy to teach. He sees himself as responsible for everyone in the family, and will often nudge you insistently if you've forgotten something. These loving, patient dogs are a rare breed that is gradually gaining popularity as a loving, trustworthy companion and, like most dogs, will excel under their master's guidance.

History of the Rott Pei

The Rott Pei is a rare hybrid breed with a poorly documented history. It is therefore important to analyze the parent dogs to understand their character traits.

A little of the Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is an ancient breed of dog, with its origins in the Drover dogs of Rome. They traveled with the Roman army to Germany, where they were crossed with some of the local dogs of the town of Rottweil, hence the name. They were strong, confident dogs, used to herd cattle and hunt bears. The Rottweiler was known for its loyalty and devotion to its masters, and was particularly protective of their property, making it an ideal guard dog. Military and police forces recognized the usefulness of these imposing dogs, and they became working dogs for these institutions. In addition to their aptitude for work, they were also excellent companion dogs, provided they had a master they could respect. The Rottweiler was registered by the American Kennel Club in 1931 and today ranks among the world's most popular breeds. Its impressive looks and calm, confident attitude contribute to its continuing popularity.

A little of the Shar Pei

The Shar Pei is another ancient breed from China with a distinctive blue tongue, like the Chow Chow dog that may have been used to create the Shar Pei. It was used as a working dog for herding, guarding and hunting. The Shar Pei was even used as a fighting dog, its loose, wrinkled skin being difficult for its opponent to catch. At one time, the Shar Pei was considered good to eat in China, and no one was allowed to own one as a pet. This led to a rapid decline in numbers, which were only saved from extinction by a breeder who promoted the Shar Pei outside China. Selective breeding overcame some of the breed's earlier health problems, such as painful eye problems and diminished folds, to make the modern Shar Pei a healthier, stronger breed. In 1978, the Shar Pei was registered as one of the rarest breeds on the planet. The concentrated efforts of American breeders reversed the trend, and their numbers grew steadily after 1981, as their popularity spread around the world. Today, the Shar Pei is one of the most popular dogs in the UK, and occupies a prominent place in other countries as a loyal companion and pet.

Appearance of the Rott Pei

The Rott Pei's appearance can vary according to the genetics it inherits from its parents. One thing is certain: the body is strong and well-balanced, muscular and robust. Leg length may vary, but he's strong and quick on his feet. A broad, deep chest and a powerful head, often block-shaped and quite large, are their most recognizable features. The muzzle is strong and powerful, and the teeth come together to form an impressive scissor bite. Your Rott Pei may have facial or body wrinkles inherited from the Shar Pei parent, and the color may be either black and tan like the traditional Rottweiler, or rather soft fawn or brown/gold like the Shar Pei. Ears are often high, with tips that fold back on top. Dark amber or dark brown eyes are round and alert. The coat is short to medium-length, with a rough texture. The tail is of medium length and is held fairly low or curled over the back. An attractive, muscular and impressive dog with a confident, loyal nature, the Rott Pei is a rare hybrid that proves popular with owners.

Temperament of the Rott Pei

This attractive medium to large-sized dog is known for its intelligence, affection and protective nature towards its family. They get on well with children, showing patience and tolerance. As companions, they are exceptional, loyal and courageous dogs who will give their lives to protect yours. But they are also known to be cuddly dogs who love a little attention and cuddles. He's an ideal watchdog, as his sharp eyes and senses miss nothing, and he'll alert you with a bark or growl. Once he's met a new face, he loses interest and accepts him as part of the extended family. Children will have a willing playmate, as these dogs love to play, and will retrieve the ball or find hidden objects for as long as the game lasts. They'll be the last to withdraw from a game, but if they get bored, they can switch off and wander off to do their own thing. Reliable, good-natured and affectionate, the Rott Pei is a well-respected dog that wins hearts and is praised throughout the canine community.

Needs and activities of the Rott Pei

The Rott Pei is a large dog that needs exercise to stay healthy and well socialized. Although he's not hyperactive, he still needs a good daily walk of about an hour, and makes an ideal companion when jogging or biking along a trail. He can be a little reserved when meeting other dogs and people, but he's a confident dog with few fears. They also like to romp in the water and are ideal playmates for older children. Their size can impress little ones, as they can easily knock them over without meaning to. The Rott Pei learns quickly and is very receptive to training. They are obedient and respectful of their masters, but need a firm hand to control them, as they are strong and confident animals.

Maintenance of the Rott Pei

The Rott Pei is a low-maintenance dog, with a medium-length coat that only needs brushing once a week. The use of a stiff bristle brush removes loose hair and keeps the coat clean and healthy. These dogs only need a bath when they're dirty, as their coats are almost self-cleaning. Using a mild dog shampoo preserves the skin's natural oils, helping the coat to withstand the elements. The Rott Pei can withstand most temperatures, as it comes from a rustic breeding program. Other maintenance issues include cleaning teeth at least twice a week and checking ears and folds for infections or sores. The Rott Pei is an attractive, loyal and affectionate dog, and a rare new hybrid breed that is gaining in popularity.
