A brief presentation of the Scoodle

A Scoodle is a mix of Scottish Terrier and Poodle. They are medium-sized, affectionate and intelligent dogs that make loyal companions. They can be gentle with children if socialized early, but can snap if teased or handled roughly, so you'll need to keep an eye on them during playtime. They are energetic, playful dogs who prefer the company of their family, and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long. They will suit people who are often at home and don't need to travel too much. They are alert and make good watchdogs. Scoodles are easy to groom, especially those with short coats. They don't shed much and are hypoallergenic, ideal for allergy sufferers. The most common colors are black, gray or brown, and they can have white or silver markings.

History of the Scoodle

A Scoodle is a designer dog and is a cross between a pure-bred Scottish Terrier and a pure-bred Poodle.

A little of the Scottish Terrier

Independent and stubborn, Scottish Terriers were bred in Scotland to hunt vermin and follow prey to the ground. They were first mentioned by Bishop John Lesley in his History of Scotland from 1436 to 1561. Scottish Terriers were then divided into two groups: the Dandie Dinmont Terriers and the Skye Terriers, and the Scottish Terrier belonged to the latter. Queen Victoria kept Scottish Terriers, and her favorite dog was called Laddie. As well as royalty, these feisty dogs were also admired by presidents, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who had one named Fala, and George W. Bush, who had two named Barney and Miss Beazley. One of the tokens in the Monopoly board game is a Scottie.

A little of the Poodle

Some consider them spoiled apartment dogs, but the Poodle is said to be the second most intelligent dog breed after the Border Collie. Often thought to originate in France, the Poodle actually comes from Germany, where it was known as the Pudel or Canis Familiaris Aquatius. They were popular in France and were called "chien canard ou Caniche", due to their duck-hunting skills. The Poodle is gifted for agility, obedience and tracking, and is also known for its circus skills. They are excellent swimmers and their coat is adapted to water. Poodles come in three sizes: standard, miniature and toy. Elvis Presley is said to have had a Poodle named Champagne.

Appearance of the Scoodle

A Scoodle is a small to medium-sized dog with the appearance of two parent breeds. The most common colors are black, gray or brown, and they may have white or silver markings. They weigh between 4.5 and 9 kilos and reach a height of up to 30.5 centimeters. Their coat can be short or medium-length, and can be straight, curly, wiry or silky. They have a square-shaped body like the parent Scottish Terrier breed, with the longer legs of the Poodle. The Scoodle's eyes are dark brown and quite expressive, while its tail is generally of medium length.

Temperament of the Scoodle

The Scoodle is very affectionate towards family members and generally develops a strong bond with them. It doesn't like to be left alone for long periods and can develop separation anxiety, which can lead to destructive behavior. They are loyal dogs, very protective and courageous if need be. They make good watchdogs and are always on the alert. They can bark excessively, so will need to be trained in appropriate behavior. They are very intelligent dogs and will respond well to training, although they can be a little stubborn so will need to be held with a firm hand. Lots of praise and positive reinforcement will produce the best results. The Scoodle will behave well with children if socialized early, but will not tolerate rough treatment, so children should be taught to interact respectfully with dogs. He's a little cautious with strangers, but will be friendly once he's got to know a person. They are energetic, playful dogs that can also be trained to get along with other pets.

Needs and activities of the Scoodle

Scoodles are active, energetic dogs that need daily exercise to stay fit and healthy. They don't need very long walks, but will enjoy a daily stroll and playtime with the family. They love to play with toys and, being intelligent, thrive on mental and physical stimulation. They are suitable for new dog owners, and also for those living in apartments, provided they go out every day. They tend to chase small animals, so make sure your dog is on a leash when you go to the dog park or beach. These dogs are not extremely weather-sensitive, but try to exercise them in the morning or evening when it's not too hot, and make sure they're not outside in winter.

Maintenance of the Scoodle

Scoodles are easy to care for and don't shed much. They are also hypoallergenic, making them ideal for allergy sufferers. Weekly brushing should be more than enough to keep your pet looking its best. If his coat is a little longer, you may need to brush it several times a week to prevent tangling. You can also trim the hair or take your dog to a groomer for a professional cut. You don't need to bathe your dog too often, unless you have to. Try to brush your dog's teeth every day to keep teeth and gums in good condition. Also wipe the eyes to avoid any tear staining, and check the ears for any signs of infection or dirt. Nails should also be trimmed if they become too long.
