A brief presentation of the Wire Foxie Doxie

The Wire Foxie Doxie is half Wire Fox Terrier and half Dachshund. Both are small dog breeds, so your Wire Foxie Doxie will probably weigh no more than 9 kilos and measure around 38 centimeters at the withers. These dogs are best suited to families without young children, as they can be surly if irritated or teased. They're also hunters at heart, so they'll go after small animals like rabbits and hamsters. This breed is highly intelligent and eager to please, which is why it's easy to train in most cases, although you need to be persistent and make your dog understand who's boss.

History of the Wire Foxie Doxie

Although the Wire Foxie Doxie has been around for some time, it hasn't yet built up a history. That's why you need to take a look at the history of the Wire Fox Terrier Wire and the Dachshund to learn more about the Wire Foxie Doxie's characteristics.

A little of the Wire Fox Terrier

Originating in England in the 1700s, the Wire Fox Terrier was bred from black and tan Wire Terriers for use in hunting and pointing. In the Terrier's early development, Fox Terrier Smooth and Fox Terrier Wire were bred to achieve a cleaner cut and whiter coat. The breed was cherished by royalty, and even King Edward had a Wire Fox Terrier named Caesar, who walked beside his coffin at his funeral in 1910. They were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 as the 101st most common dog breed in the United States.

A little of the Dachshund

The Dachshund is a German breed named for what it is, a badger dog. It was developed by German hunters between the 1700s and 1800s by mixing French Bassets, Epagneuls, Terriers, Pinschers and Braques. Their long bodies and short, powerful legs were perfect for digging badger holes so they could get in and catch their prey. They were also used to hunt foxes, rabbits, otters and other small prey. In the 1800s, it was discovered how affectionate and well-behaved they were. They became popular pets and, due to their popularity, breeders decided to develop a type of miniature Dachshund. The American Dachshund Club was founded in 1895, just ten years after the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. The breed is still the 13th most popular dog in America.

Appearance of the Wire Foxie Doxie

Your Wire Foxie Doxie is a small dog weighing around 9 kilos and measuring up to 38 centimeters, with a rough, short to medium coat. It can come in a variety of shades and patterns such as: isabelle, golden, orange, blue, gray, beige, fawn, black, chocolate, white, spotted, merle, brindle, piebald, sable, spotted or spotted. It has a rectangular body and muzzle with a broad nose that can be brown, black or isabella, and its intelligent eyes can be blue, hazel, brown, amber or green. Its legs are long and straight with large paws, and it has a curved, tapering tail.

Temperament of the Wire Foxie Doxie

The Wire Foxie Doxie is an excellent pet for the right family, but best suited to homes without young children or small pets. It's best to socialize them when they're puppies and let them interact often with other dogs so they're well socialized. They're generally happy, easy-going dogs who listen well if they're well trained, but you need to make them understand that you're the master. They can suffer from small dog syndrome if left to their own devices, so you must always be consistent with the rules.

Needs and activities of the Wire Foxie Doxie

To keep your dog happy and healthy, you need to make sure he gets enough exercise. As he has high energy requirements, your Wire Foxie Doxie needs at least one hour of activity a day, for example playing ball, going for a walk or playing with other dogs in a dog park. As he's a small dog, most of his exercise needs can be met indoors. You can play ball, teach him tricks or simply let him run around the house playing with his favorite toys. However, all dogs need to go outside several times a day to relieve themselves and get some fresh air. If you have a fenced-in yard, you can let him play outside for an hour or two every day, weather permitting. Keep an eye on him, though, as he's very good at digging and could easily get under the fence.

Maintenance of the Wire Foxie Doxie

With a Wire Foxie Doxie, you need to pluck the dead hairs from your dog's coat about three or four times a year. You can do this yourself, by hand or with a hair removal tool, or have it done by a professional groomer. In addition to waxing, you should brush your dog with a long-hair brush at least every other day to ensure that his coat remains healthy and to reduce shedding. You can also bathe your dog, if necessary, with a mild dog shampoo. In addition, your dog should have his teeth and ears cleaned once a week and his nails trimmed once a month.
