A very old sheepdog from the Homolje region of eastern Serbia, the Homolian Sheepdog has remained virtually unchanged throughout time, thanks to the relative isolation of this region. The Sheepdog is related to other dogs found in the Balkans, including the Sarplaninac, Carpatin, Shipka Shepherd and Bukovina Sheepdog, breeds considered by some breeders in the region to be exactly the same as the Homolian Sheepdog.

Today, these wonderful dogs are used in the breeding program to re-establish the Serbian Tornjak. Broad-headed and strong-boned, the Homolian Sheepdog has the true molossoid type, although comparatively smaller than most Balkan dogs. Not as popular as the Sarplaninac or the Tornjak, Homolian Sheepdogs are slowly making a name for themselves at shows in their homeland, but they are still mainly working molosses. In recent years, there has been a move towards standardization of this beautiful Serbian breed, and it is gaining international recognition.

Friendly towards people and attentive to his flock and master, he is also suitable as a companion dog. They are resilient, smart and agile workers, much appreciated and highly valued by the Vlach en Homolje population. Devoted to its owner and tolerant of other dogs, the Serbian Homoljac makes a pleasant companion. The coat is hard and rich, generally longer in the winter months. Although there are dogs of various colors, most pure Homolian Sheepdogs are colored with white patches or basic white with orange, red, brown or black patches. The average size is around 59 centimeters, but larger specimens do exist.
