A brief presentation of the Sammypoo

The Sammypoo is a faithful and affectionate combination of the Poodle and the Samoyed. This breed is medium-sized, measuring around 51 centimeters in height and weighing around 25 kilos on average at adulthood. They have medium-length coats that can shed a little due to their Samoyed genes, but they can also be hypoallergenic like the Poodle. Your Sammypoo loves to play with anyone, but needs to be socialized from an early age and supervised around young children. This breed may also have a habit of chewing on objects, so you'll need to train him well and be consistent.

History of the Sammypoo

As a hybrid breed, the Sammypoo hasn't been around long enough to have a history. So you'll have to refer to the history of the Poodle and the Samoyed.

A little of the Samoyed

The Samoyed is a gentle, intelligent Russian breed, descended from the Spitz, for herding, protecting and pulling sledges. The breed has been around since primitive times, working alongside fishermen and hunters in Siberia. It owes its name to the Samoyed tribe, who used these dogs to help them hunt, fish and pull their sledges. They are known for their ability to herd and pull sleds, and have been used on many important expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic due to their strength, endurance and ability to withstand the cold. They were accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1906, where they are the 65th most popular breed.

A little of the Poodle

The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds, and although many people think it's French, it actually originated in Germany. It's a unique, intelligent breed that began as a hunting dog, bred from the North African Barbet and several different water dogs. Others believe they are descendants of Asian herding dogs and German water dogs. They are thought to date back to the 1st century, as drawings and statues of Poodle-like dogs have been found in Egyptian tombs and Roman artefacts dating from this period. Two smaller Poodle breeds, the Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle, were created during the 15th century by mating small Poodles with other small Poodles. Both the Miniature Poodle and the Standard Poodle were used as hunting and truffle-finding dogs, but the Toy Poodle was generally a lapdog for the wealthy. In the 1800s, gypsies discovered the Poodle's talent for learning tricks and began using them as street performers and circus dogs. The American Kennel Club registered the first Poodle in 1887 and it is still the 7th most common dog breed in the U.S.The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds and, although many people think it's French, it actually originated in Germany. Appearance of the Sammypoo

The Sammypoo can have amber or brown eyes with a brown or black nose on a pointed muzzle. Its curly, medium-length coat is soft and can be any color, but is most often white, piebald, blue, merle, fawn or chocolate. He has triangular fur ears that hang downwards, and his expression is typically curious and intelligent. They are medium-sized dogs that can weigh around 25 kilos on average and stand around 51 centimeters tall. They have a long tail that can be straight or curl around their back.

Temperament of the Sammypoo

Even if your Sammypoo is friendly and adorable, it needs to be supervised in the presence of children to avoid accidents. It's not a very good watchdog, as it's very quiet, but its bark can alert you to strangers or threats. This breed is generally easy to train, as it is highly intelligent and eager to please, but some dogs can be stubborn and chew things. It's important to respect the rules and be patient to prevent your dog from constantly pushing the limits. Make sure you socialize your dog well when he's young, and continue to nurture his social skills so he gets on well with other dogs at the dog park.

Needs and activities of the Sammypoo

The Sammypoo needs at least one hour to 90 minutes of exercise a day to stay healthy and happy. Some of the best activities for this breed include agility classes, obedience training, Frisbee or fetch, hiking, running, swimming or any other type of physical and mental play in which owners participate. They need to be mentally and physically stimulated every day, otherwise they risk becoming irritated or bored, which can lead to behavioral problems such as aggression and frequent barking. You should also take your dog to play with other dogs at a dog park or doggy daycare to keep him properly socialized. Apartment living is not the ideal environment for the Sammypoo. He'll thrive in a home with a secure, enclosed garden where he can run and stretch.

Maintenance of the Sammypoo

Sammypoo needs to be carefully brushed at least three or four times a week, and lightly brushed every day to prevent tangling. Depending on whether your Sammypoo's coat is more like that of a Samoyed or Poodle, you may need to groom him every six to eight weeks. You can take him to a professional groomer or do it yourself with a quality clipper and scissors. Your dog should be bathed every two weeks, or more often if necessary. When bathing, be sure to clean your dog's ears and teeth to prevent tooth decay. You should also trim his nails once a month to prevent splitting or cracking.
