A brief presentation of the Altman White English Bulldog

The Altman White English Bulldog is a Bulldog breed recently developed under the direction of Ray Altman, for whom the breed is named. These dogs are said to be a recreation of a type of Bulldog known as the Old English White Bulldog that was frequently found in the southern regions of the United States in the 19th century. Using a combination of the traditional English Bulldog and White English Bulldogs, Altman and the other breeders involved developed a friendly, loyal breed of Bulldog with improved athleticism and vigor, better overall health and higher tolerance of extreme environmental conditions.

History of the Altman White English Bulldog

The Altman White English Bulldog is a new breed that was developed barely two decades ago. The breed's development is due in large part to the dedication of a Waycross, GA breeder, Ray Altman, who began developing the breed with the help and support of a few other Bulldog enthusiasts. Although a thoroughly modern breed, the Altman White English Bulldog was developed to serve as a much older model, the Old English White Bulldog. In order to achieve the bone structure and overall appearance he was trying to recreate, Ray began by breeding an AKC-registered English Bulldog to a White English Bulldog, resulting in physically robust and powerful dogs that retained much of the gentle temperament of the traditional English Bulldog, but with fewer and less severe health problems due to its longer, straighter legs and less pronounced brachycephalic face. Like the Old English White Bulldog on which they were based, the Altman White English Bulldog breed was developed into a versatile farm dog that can be used as a hunting companion or livestock drover, while also serving as an excellent watchdog. Altman White English Bulldogs are currently being bred and an official standard has been established. As of 1995, the Continental Kennel Club has recognized these dogs as a distinct breed, although no other dog clubs allow the breed on their registers.

Appearance of the Altman White English Bulldog

Altman White English Bulldogs are generally medium to large-sized dogs, with powerful, well-defined muscles and a strong, straight back. Their head is broad and slightly wider than average, and in some cases a natural furrow runs down the center of the skull. Although broad, their head is not as wide as most intimidating breeds and, although some brachycephalics are considered acceptable in this breed, skull foreshortening should be slight to moderate. They have medium-sized dark eyes that can be round, almond-shaped or oval, and small to medium-sized or floppy ears set high on the skull. Although not all Altman White English Bulldogs have a natural bite, it's quite common. All colors are acceptable for their short, stiff, single-layer coat, but coats containing large white areas may indicate merle genetics and are not recommended.

Temperament of the Altman White English Bulldog

This breed of dog is very devoted and loyal to its owner and family. Although they are generally gentle with family members, the Altman White English Bulldog seems to have more territorial and protective instincts than most modern English Bulldogs. Aggression between dogs can be more pronounced if the dog is not properly socialized during its formative months. This breed usually has a healthy prey and without much socialization, these dogs can be unreliable towards smaller animals, especially those that move quickly. These dogs form an extremely strong bond with their family and can experience separation anxiety or become depressed if left alone for too long. Breeds of all kinds have been bred in part for their tenacious nature. Although these dogs are intelligent and can be easily trained with positive, reward-based training, rigorous training methods are likely to meet with stubborn resistance.

Needs and activities of the Altman White English Bulldog

Altman White English Bulldogs, while not exceptionally active, tend to be more energetic than most traditional English Bulldogs. The less extreme body structure of this breed compared to the English Bulldog enables it to cope better with intense temperature fluctuations, both hot and cold, and the longer legs give it greater stamina for walking and running. In addition to the ability to walk and run further than shorter-legged Bulldog breeds, the relatively long, straight legs of Altman White English Bulldogs make it easier to enjoy activities such as agility training or swimming. These dogs are not well suited to apartment living due to their active, protective nature, and are much more comfortable if they have a home with a secure, fenced yard to run around in.

Maintenance of the Altman White English Bulldog

The Altman White English Bulldog, like most Bulldog breeds, may require more frequent bathing due to a stronger dog odor than most, and wrinkles around the face should be wiped frequently to avoid accumulation of dirt. and debris between the folds. Brushing this dog with a smooth brush or grooming glove once a week or every other day will help keep his moderate shedding under control and keep his coat shiny and supple. It's important not to neglect the dental health of these dogs, as brachycephalic animals are more likely to develop gum disease and tooth decay, especially those with a slight natural prognathism.
