The Wobbler syndrome

The Wobbler syndrome is a condition that affects large dogs.

This syndrome is due to a malformation of the cervical vertebrae (the 5th, 6th and 7th).

This malformation is characterized by a narrowing of the duct through which the spinal cord passes, deformation of the intervertebral disc, and subluxation of the cervical vertebrae. All these anomalies lead to progressive compression of the spinal cord.

Symptoms appear progressively, starting with weakness of the hindquarters, incoordination of movement and excessive lateral swaying of the pelvis, and eventually progressing to paralysis. Observation of spinal lesions by X-ray is not sufficient to predict the course of symptoms.

The origin of this syndrome is probably genetic, with an increased risk in rapidly growing animals.

Treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms. Good results can be achieved with anti-inflammatory drugs in early cases, but in severe cases of paralysis, surgical treatment should be considered.
