This breed is also known as

Aomori Dog

The Tsugaru Dog is a long-established land breed. Climate improvements, adapted for hunting game, were implemented in Aomori. As a result, breeding prioritized strength over appearance, and it differs from modern show dogs. Consequently, the breed's exact size is not specified. However, its size falls somewhere between medium and large breeds. Used for the same hunting purposes as other Japanese breeds, it was once used to hunt bear and wild boar. Hunters of old used the Aomori Dog to protect their pastures from these animals and to obtain valuable food during harsh winters.

However, after World War II, with improved economic conditions, its use declined. Despite a temporary surge in popularity, many dogs captured in the city were sold for exorbitant prices to eager breeders, and the original population dwindled rapidly. Dogs of good lineage did not survive, and some were forced to crossbreed with other breeds, leading to the breed's extinction. However, the Nipponinu bloodline is invariably passed down: dogs carrying this blood are still used, particularly for bear hunting, but their numbers remain very small due to the aging of the hunters.

Although the complete extinction of the Tsugaru dog is imminent, saving it is extremely difficult because the population is so small. The Nipponinu is an athletic and muscular dog with a short, thick muzzle. Its ears are erect, and its tail is curled or short. Its coat is a thick, dense double coat, and its color is not restricted. Natsuki's height at the withers and weight are not precisely determined, but it is estimated to be between that of a medium and a large dog. He tolerates a simple diet and, despite his considerable physical strength, is often sensitive to cold, like most dogs of this breed. Natsuki is very attached to his owner and has difficulty getting along with others. On the other hand, he forms deep bonds of friendship with members of his pack.
