Three or four ri (12 to 16 km) from Ashio lay a village called Kurosakaishi. Its inhabitants, claiming descent from defeated warriors, lived by hunting. The Kurosakaishi dogs bred in the village had enjoyed an excellent reputation since time immemorial. These carefully selected dogs were of exceptional quality, and the villagers did not hesitate to cross the mountains and valleys, where wolves were said to roam, to obtain them. However, the development of the Ashio copper mine led to a decrease in the number of animals, and it is said that the breed became extinct around the time of the Sino-Japanese War. They were then replaced by Shiba Inu, and at the end of the Meiji era, the Shiba Inu took the name Kurosaka Ishi Inu.
