This dog breed originated in the village of Akagin, Tone district (present-day Numata City). It was considered a purebred Japanese dog, like the Jikkoku and the Nakanojo Oku from Agatsuma district. It was bred in a basin upstream of the Katashina River, near Tochigi Prefecture, a region renowned for its high-quality dogs. Originally used for hunting deer and wild boar, after the decline of these animals, it was used only for hunting birds and small game. As a result, few Neri dogs were truly tested as hunting dogs. Furthermore, their abilities are considered far inferior to those of the Tokoku. With a few exceptions, the Tokoku is capable of pursuing game, unlike the Neri. Compared to the Tokoku, the number of Neri dogs kept as pets is lower, and only a small portion of the prefecture's population was aware of its existence. The Gunma Prefectural Assembly also requested their protection, as well as that of the Tokoku dog.
