The Basset Normand was a Basset-type hound belonging to the Norman family of dogs. The origins of this type of dog remain uncertain; some suggest it descends from other short-legged breeds, such as the Dachshund or the Corgi. Other experts believe that Bassets originated from hounds affected by dwarfism. This latter hypothesis is the most widely accepted, although questions remain as to whether this phenomenon occurred multiple times or if different breeds were simply crossed with existing Bassets.

In the early 20th century, local breeders merged the Basset Normand and the Basset d’Artois to create a single breed: the Basset Artésien Normand. These two dogs were considered so similar that the only notable difference lay in the shape of their limbs: straight in the Basset d’Artois and crooked in the Basset Normand.
