| The Moerman Cattle Dog was one of five recognized Belgian cattle dog breeds. Two of these breeds still exist: the Flemish Cattle Dog and the Ardennes Cattle Dog. Two others are extinct: the Roulers Cattle Dog and the Paret Cattle Dog. For centuries, cattle dogs were used to herd livestock throughout Belgium. They were selected for their skills rather than their appearance and consequently exhibited numerous regional variations. The Roulers Cattle Dog, Moerman Cattle Dog, and Paret Cattle Dog became extinct after their numbers declined sharply during the two World Wars. The last remaining dogs were used to re-establish the Flemish Cattle Dog breed. |
