| The Mini Foxy Rat Terrier is a specific cross between two very similar small dogs. The Rat Terrier and Miniature Fox Terrier are both small and easy to care for, with loyal, intelligent characteristics. | Miniature Fox Terriers came from Australia in the 1800s, although their descendants are Fox Terrier types originally from England. The first settlers were the ones who brought these dogs to Australia, where the little Smooth Fox Terriers were bred with Manchester Terriers. The offspring of this combination were eventually crossed with Whippets, English Toy Terriers and Italian Greyhounds. The aim was to create a smaller version of the Fox Terrier, while retaining the characteristics that made them so adept at hunting. They eventually developed a small dog that would be used to hunt smaller prey, such as rodents and rabbits. | The Rat Terrier was actually named by Teddy Roosevelt and originated in Great Britain. The first Rat Terriers were created in 1820 by crossing a Smooth Fox Terrier and a Manchester Terrier. The breed first appeared in the USA in the 1890s, when the only color combinations available were black and tan. Eventually, American breeders again mixed these dogs with Smooth Fox Terriers, Beagles and Whippets. The new breeds that were introduced brought new traits and colors to the dog. The Beagle added hunting and fleeing skills, made the dogs bulkier and gave access to the red color gene. Blue and brindle colors were available from the Whippet, along with increased speed and agility. | ||
