The Kawakami is a rare Japanese Spitz breed originating from the village of Kawakami in Nagano Prefecture. Known for its wolf-like appearance, unwavering loyalty, and boundless energy, it is similar to, but distinct from, the Shiba Inu. A natural guardian, it is cautious and tenacious, requiring firm training and plenty of exercise. It is designated a Japanese Natural Monument. Legend has it that hunters tamed the wild wolves of the Chichibu Mountains, and that all Kawakami Inu are descended from the now-extinct Japanese wolf. This is why it is said that a Kawakami Inu can take on an opponent larger than itself. One story even tells of a Kawakami Inu protecting its owner from a bear. Curious and active, it is also highly vigilant and fiercely loyal to its owner. It is also an excellent watchdog. Welcoming a Kawakami Inu into your home means showing it a great deal of affection. In Japan, a lack of affection is believed to lead to instability and aggression in dogs. However, with proper communication, a Kawakami can develop a deep bond and become a loyal and exceptional companion.
