| The Cascade mountain wolf (Canis lupus fuscus) was a subspecies of the gray wolf, Canis lupus, and was normally found in British Columbia, Oregon and Washington. It was identified as a species distinct from other wolves in the region by Edward Goldman in 1945, although authority for the species had been made much earlier by Richardson in 1839. The subspecies itself became extinct in 1940. Little research had been done on the Cascade wolf before it became extinct. As far as we know, the wolf's extinction was similar to that of the tiger wolf. These beautiful wolves were hunted by settlers until they were recognized as extinct in 1940. Again, the government sponsored bounties on these creatures, there were few who didn't show hostility. These wolves could have been saved if people didn't see them as a threat, and had simply let them live in their habitat. Although there was little research on the wolf, people believed they had spotted one where wolves lived before their extinction. It was described as a cinnamon-colored wolf measuring 165 cm and weighing 36-49 kg. |
