A brief presentation of the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier
The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is a hybrid mix of the smooth-coated Fox Terrier and the pure-bred Rat Terrier. Both parents are small Fox Terrier Smooth, and the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier retains the small dog look. The hybrid is a true Terrier, both tenacious and spirited in temperament, with plenty of energy for play. The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is an excellent retriever, capable of dashing off and chasing vermin from their hiding places. The Rat Terrier makes the hybrid slightly smaller than the Fox Terrier Smooth, so this hybrid is able to squeeze into tight spaces while chasing its prey.

History of the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier
The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is a hybrid of two true Terrier breeds. The dispositions of the two parent breeds are similar, and only the general appearance marks the real difference between the two parents. Currently, documentation on the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is limited, and this hybrid has no breed history. However, owners can consult the respective histories of the two parent breeds for additional information on their Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier.

 

        

A little of the Fox Terrier Smooth

         
The Fox Terrier Smooth developed in the UK when fox hunting became popular in the 18th century. Sportsmen needed a dog capable of going to ground and driving foxes from their hiding places. Originally, the Fox Terrier breed included smooth-haired and wire-haired varieties, but the Fox Terrier Smooth is now considered a separate breed. The Fox Terrier Smooth is the most decorated breed at the Westminster Kennel Club, having won 13 Best-in-Show awards in its history and was, at one time, the most recognizable breed. The Fox Terrier Smooth arrived in America in 1879 and, in 1885, the American Kennel Club registered its first Fox Terrier Smooth, a dog named Cricket. Although today the breed isn't as popular as it once was, the Fox Terrier Smooth continues to be a star at shows.

A little of the Rat Terrier
The Rat Terrier is an American Terrier breed that developed in the 19th and 20th centuries from the breeding of several Terrier breeds, including the Fox Terrier Smooth, the Manchester Terrier and the Old English White Terrier. Toy Fox Terriers that were too large for their breed category were used in the Rat Terrier breeding program to reduce the size of the Rat Terrier. In addition, the Whippet breed was used to increase the Rat Terrier's flight capabilities, while the Beagle was used for its pack mentality qualities. The resulting Rat Terrier breed is a vast mixture of several bloodlines. The Rat Terrier may have been so named by President Theodore Roosevelt, who kept one at the White House to combat the rat problem. Rat Terriers developed to help farmers with rat problems in their barns, and the breed's size enabled them to squeeze into tight spaces to get at the vermin. The breed was very popular between the 1910s and the 1940s, but the increased use of poisons on farms reduced the Rat Terrier's popularity in the 1950s. Fortunately, the breed was maintained by some breeders and re-emerged in the 1970s. The Rat Terrier was not recognized by the American Kennel Club until 2013, and is now moderately popular.

Appearance of the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier
The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier can come in many different colors, but is generally white with black or black and tan markings. They are small dogs with short, sturdy legs and a high-set tail. The head is small and proportionate to the body, with medium-sized ears that stand up or fold back. Smooth Foxy Rat Terriers have round, dark eyes and a black nose. Its muzzle is fine and tapered, but may be slightly smaller and shorter if the dog resembles the Rat Terrier. The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier has a tight mouth and can have a scissor or flat bite.

Temperament of the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier
The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is a true Terrier with a feisty, energetic temperament. However, these dogs are also very affectionate with their family and calm indoors. Smooth Foxy Rat Terriers love children and can play for hours with them. The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is also an excellent companion for other dogs, although cats and small pets can excite its prey drive. However, with early and consistent socialization, the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier can learn to live in harmony with other pets. This breed is intelligent and has an active mind, but can be a little stubborn when it comes to training. Novice dog owners and those with little time to devote to their Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier may find it difficult to train.

Needs and activities of the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier
The Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier is an active dog, with an active mind too. He needs daily exercise that mobilizes his body and mind. Without daily exercise that stimulates his mind and body, the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier can become bored and adopt negative behaviors, such as chewing or digging. Smooth Foxy Rat Terriers have a high heat tolerance and dislike the cold. As for living in an apartment or small space, the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier can adapt to city life, but a small garden is ideal for this breed that loves to run.

Maintenance of the Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier
Smooth Foxy Rat Terriers are easy to care for, as their coats are short and smooth. They do, however, shed moderately, and should be brushed once a week to reduce the amount of loose, dead hair. Brushing also removes dirt and debris that clings to the Fox Terrier Smooth's coat. Dirt is easy to remove from the coat with a brush or even a wipe, thanks to its smooth coat. Smooth Foxy Rat Terriers don't need frequent baths, which can also strip away the body's natural oils. However, if you do decide to bathe your Smooth Foxy Rat Terrier, use a hypoallergenic shampoo and pat dry to avoid irritation. Smooth Foxy Rat Terriers don't usually smell like dogs, and are not hypoallergenic.
