The Fox Terrier Smooth is curious, alert and robust for its size. Coming from a working dog background, he retains his hunting instinct and will pursue mice and small animals. History of the Smooth Toy Foxter

The Toy Smooth Foxter is a new hybrid breed. So we need to look at the history of the parent dogs to find clues about their development and characteristics.

	A little of the Fox Terrier Smooth
	The Fox Terrier Smooth is just a (slightly) larger version of the Smooth Toy Foxter. It is one of the oldest Terrier-type dogs, originating in the British Isles in the 17th century. The Fox Terrier was originally developed by crossing with the Dachshund, and later with the Fox Hound and Beagle. The Fox Terrier was a working dog, enthusiastically engaged in eradicating rats, foxes and vermin that harmed farmers' livestock. The Fox Terrier would find the animal in the ground and dig it out, barking and darting towards it to hunt and kill it. The Fox Terrier came in two different coat styles, Wire Fox Smooth and Wire Fox Rough, and both were considered the same breed for many years. The hardier wirehaired dog was used in harsher regions where its more resistant coat could withstand the climate. The standard for the Wire Fox Terrier Smooth was established in 1876, separating it from wire-haired dogs. Kennel clubs still debate whether it's the same dog, but a variation in coat. But the American Kennel Club recognized the Fox Terrier Smooth in 1885. Known for its ability to hunt, track and excel at agility and tricks, this attractive little dog is a popular companion and a tough, big-hearted character.

	The Toy Fox Terrier has been around for a long time, probably almost a century. It was first known as a small farm working dog, used to control rats and vermin in barns and grain stores. It was developed by mating the smaller, Fox Terrier Smooth with several other toy breeds to achieve a smaller stature. Breeds such as the Chihuahua and Manchester Terrier were used to reduce the breed's size. However, breeders found that the characteristics of these smaller Terriers didn't suit the dog they were trying to get, so they went back to breeding only smaller Fox Terrier Smooth. The first Toy Fox Terriers were registered in England in 1936, then in the USA in 2003. A typical Terrier, the Toy Fox Terrier is appreciated as a companion dog, but retains the strong hunting instincts of its professional past and will chase anything that moves. This miniature version of the popular Fox Terrier has a devoted group of followers, and is popular in the small dog category because of its feisty personality.

The Smooth Toy Foxter is an attractive little dog with a well-proportioned, athletic body. Built for speed, this little dog has a deep chest that gives him plenty of oxygen for all his runs, and his slender legs and well-padded paws enable him to move quickly and turn around in an instant, ideal characteristics for a Terrier. A muscular neck supports the slender head. The top of the head is slightly rounded, and the large, pointed ears are set wide apart and erect. The muzzle is long and pointed, with teeth that end in a scissor bite. Round, sparkling eyes, deep in color but sparkling with mischief, guarantee that this dog doesn't miss a trick. He looks happy with a broad smile and hanging tongue. His short, docked tail is carried high and proud. His coat is short, dense and has a white base with patches of color like black, tan or red. They still possess the old Terrier skills and instincts, and will chase small creatures, from mice to the neighbor's cat, and so need to be watched. Because of this instinct, they need a secure yard or to be kept on a leash when out walking. This dog needs a leader, someone he can respect, otherwise he may try to get the upper hand, and that's when life can get difficult with a dog who whines, barks and tries to control his fellow dogs.
