A brief presentation of the Labrador Husky

The Labrador Husky is a special breed of dog. It's often confused with a Husky-Lab mix, but in fact it's its own breed. The Labrador Husky was originally brought to Labrador, Canada, in the 1300s by the Inuit people. Its main purpose was to help the Inuit survive in a very demanding environment. To this end, the Labrador Husky was trained to pull sledges carrying goods. Labrador Huskies are known as large but gentle dogs. The breed can grow larger than the best-known Siberian Husky, weighing between 27 and 45 kilos. This dog has been domesticated by families to serve as the family pet. Labrador Huskies are good with children when well trained, and need a committed owner to provide for their needs. Some of these needs include proper grooming, which means regular brushing of its thick double coat to ensure maintenance. This breed tends to have serious health problems, including hip dysplasia, but generally they will live to between 10 and 13 years of age.

History of the Labrador Husky

The Labrador Husky originated in the Labrador part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Labrador is the northern, mainland part of the province. The breed probably arrived in the region with the Thule Inuit, who came to Canada around 1300 AD. Although they were once closely related to other northern breeds, such as the Siberian Husky, they isolated themselves in Labrador and continued to develop on their own. Their history of being bred with wolves does not mean they are wolfdogs, and they have no recent wolf ancestry. However, they still retain some of their wolf-like physical characteristics. Although they were isolated, some Labradorians introduced Alaskan Malamute blood to improve their sledding skills and, later, for training purposes, the German Shepherd Dog. This created another sled dog that bears a striking resemblance to the Siberian Husky, but is much larger and more wolf-like. This breed had helped people drive sleds until the invention of snowmobiles. From then on, it was much less common for the dog to be used as a sled dog to drive heavy loads. These days, it's often the case that the breed is seen in dog races or helping to find and rescue lost people. However, most people now have dogs as pets.

	Despite its name, the Labrador Retriever is not native to Labrador, but is actually thought to have originated in Newfoundland. They were originally bred by the Chukchi Indians in the Soviet Arctic and provided them with an essential means of survival, serving both as transport sled dogs and hunting aids. Today, they continue to be used as sled dogs, but are also excellent companions for active households, as they have great stamina and need plenty of exercise.
