A brief presentation of the Nebolish Mastiff |
| The Nebolish is a dog of great presence, the most agile of the Mastiff breeds. It should have a strong muscular structure, big bones and a broad chest. The head is broad with natural ears, a short, broad muzzle and a scissor bite. Excessive cheeks are not desired, so there's no slobber problem. The coat is generally short to medium length, but long layers can appear. Colors include fawn and brindle in all shades, including a rare silver. Markings include a black mask; white markings are permitted but not desired. The tail can be shortened. |
History of the Nebolish Mastiff |
| There are conflicting reports on the origin of the Nebolish Mastiff. Some sources indicate: With over 80 mastiff types, the Nebolish is one of the rarest. It was developed in the late 1960s in the northwest and Canada. The breed was developed to increase the mastiff's agility, health and life expectancy by crossing Old English, Bull, Dogue de Bordeaux, Great Danes, and it is suspected that Great Dane, Boxer and Saint Bernard may be in the lineage. There has never been an exact breakdown of the breeding program. To keep the line pure, the exact breeds that evolved into the Nebolish we know today has never been disclosed. Nebolish ancestry can be traced back to Aristotle and Alexander the Great, who received these large dogs to protect soldiers from lions. The Nebolish Mastiff is not a new breed, but one that has been lost to history and now rediscovered in the Nebolish Mastiff. Some say it was developed in Canada in the 1960s, crossing the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux, the English Mastiff, the Boxer, the Bullterrier, the Bullmastiff, the Deutsche Dogge and the Saint Bernard, while others claim that the Nebolish Mastiff is simply a cross between the German Boxer and the French Bullmastiff. Others report that the Nebolish Mastiff is a breed still in the development stage, and some even claim that it is a mix. The CKC (Continental Kennel Club) recognizes the English Mastiff and the Neapolitan Mastiff as a Nebolish Mastiff. To date, we have met only one breeder of the Nebolish Mastiff. |

| Both males and females should have a very solid muscular structure, the emphasis being on a dog that is healthy and works with agility, even at a mature age. No breed is exempt from health problems, and there have been no predispositions in the Nebolish. The Nebolish was developed to be a large, agile dog, free from genetic defects. Mastiff breeding is not recommended for the novice, as there are many breeding problems with mastiffs. Neutering is recommended to ensure a longer life. Temperament of the Nebolish Mastiff |
| The Nebolish Mastiff is very temperate, alert and dignified. They are not excessive barkers. Loyal, easy to train and naturally protective, they can be stubborn if they feel they have more spirit than their master. His intelligence, loyal affection and fearless courage make him a much-desired companion. An excellent family member, often used as a working dog or livestock protector. Good-natured, patient and playful with children. Mastiffs require training and strong firm leadership skills, and are not recommended for first-time dog owners. The aim of training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It's a natural instinct for a dog to have a command in his pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The whole pack cooperates under one leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure by growling and finally biting, all other humans must be higher in the pecking order than the dog. Needs and activities of the Nebolish Mastiff |
| The Nebolish Mastiff is not for apartment living. He can get by with a daily walk and a large yard, but will need acreage to explore. Not inclined to roam, but must be contained due to the intimidation of its size. Once boundaries have been established, Nebolish will stay in a yard with a stock fence with no problem. The Nebolish was developed in Canada by a very cold climate, spending winters in front of the fireplace. This breed thrives in warm climates, loving sun and water. The Nebolish Mastiff needs room to run, and loves to swim and hike. The adult Nebolish is at home indoors, but needs a daily walk. When walking, the dog should be heeled beside or behind the person holding the leash, because in a dog's mind, the leader leads the way, and that leader must be the human. These dogs like to check pastures with their owners, and will make sure all fences are secure and free from intruders. |
