Considered a variant of the Tibetan Mastiff, this rare breed is also known as the dog of the Amdo people of Tibet.

Primarily a protector and guard dog for nomads, the Amdo, a powerful Mastiff, is also a dog capable of herding and hunting. Very aggressive and independent, this massive working dog is not suited to city life.

The influence of Amdo blood is obviously related to the Do-Khyi, and some say this is shown by the difficulties in its temperament and the way it allows itself to be trained. Planed, muscular and larger than most Tibetan dogs, the Amdo Mastiff belongs to a type of mountain dog bear.

Compared with the western Do-Khyi, the Amdo has a shorter muzzle and a broader head, like a frame more squarely established in body. Its undercoat is dense and rich, and with its long hair, this hound is perfectly suited to the harsh climates of Tibet, but can be a problem during the summer months in warmer countries. Most dogs are black, brown or gray, always with tan and white patches. Average height is around 76 centimeters.
