A brief presentation of the Shiba Corgi |
| The Shiba Corgi is a cross between the Shiba and the Welsh Corgi Pembroke or Welsh Corgi Cardigan. As they are all small dogs, the Shiba Corgi is short with a long body and has a fox-like appearance. They come in a variety of colors, but generally bear the white Corgi markings on their face, chest and feet. This breed of dog makes a good family pet if properly trained and socialized as a puppy. They are generally easy to train and can also be excellent watchdogs. With their thick coats, they need to be groomed often and brushed daily, as they shed quite a lot. |

| The Shiba originated in Japan and has been around since ancient times, and is considered the oldest of the Japanese breeds. Originally bred to hunt and scavenge small game, it is a descendant of the Spitz. Although it has existed for centuries, it only received the name Shiba Inu in the 1920s. The breed was named a natural product of Japan under the Cultural Properties Act in 1936. It almost became extinct after the Second World War due to the distemper virus, but was reconstituted by crossing with three variants, the Sanin Shiba, the Mino Shiba and the Shinshu Shiba. They arrived in America in 1954 and were accepted by the AKC in 1992, where they are the 44th most popular dog. | ||

| The Welsh Corgi Pembroke was bred in Wales in the 1100s from the Spitz, Norwegian Elkhound, Chow Chow, Samoyed, Schipperke and Keeshond, where it was used to drive cattle. They were introduced to Wales by Flemish weavers and are thought to have travelled with the Vikings to Britain. Originally, they were used to herd sheep by biting their legs, but eventually became popular pets. In 1934, the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club and is the 18th most common dog in the U.S.A. |

| The Welsh Corgi Cardigan owes its name to its furry tail, which resembles a cardigan sweater. It was bred from the Pomeranian, Collie and Dachshund for hunting, guarding and herding. The breed has often been confused with its close relative, the Welsh Corgi Pembroke. They became popular after being imported to Massachusetts in the 1930s and were accepted into the American Kennel Club in 1935, where they are the 69th most popular dog breed. | ||

| The Shiba and Welsh Corgi are both small dogs. The Shiba Corgi will measure between 25.5 and 38 centimeters and weigh between 7 and 11.5 kilos. They are long and short, with very short legs and a curled tail that can be short or long. They have a fox-like appearance, with a pointed muzzle, straight, pointed ears, a black nose and dark brown eyes. They sometimes appear to smile. Their coat is thick and dense, with a well-defined Corgi mask. It can come in a variety of colors, such as white and cream, white and brown, black and white, red, fawn, blue, brindle, sable, pied, or any combination of these. |

| The Shiba Corgi is a loyal, affectionate dog with lots of energy and excitement in its small body. He has the ability to become a wonderful companion for any family if trained correctly and early. Be sure to be consistent and firm, as he'll try to push the limits and if he senses a weakness, he'll attack it. The Shiba Corgi will also protect you from anything it considers a threat, no matter how big or small. They're intelligent and quick learners, so it's usually easy to teach them tricks. Give them the opportunity to excel in obedience classes; it's a way for them to learn about boundaries, and it's also a good place to practice social skills. |
Needs and activities of the Shiba Corgi |
| The Shiba Corgi is a very active dog with a lot of nervous energy to expend. It's best for him to get about an hour of vigorous exercise a day to stay in top shape, as he tends to put on weight. In addition, dogs that don't get enough exercise can become bored or anxious and develop behavioral problems, such as chewing on objects, or even becoming aggressive. Some of the best activities for this breed of dog include hunting or herding, swimming, playing with other dogs at the local dog park, hiking, long walks, a long game of fetch or Frisbee, and even agility trials. |
Maintenance of the Shiba Corgi |
| These dogs shed quite a lot, so you'll need to brush them daily if you don't want to see a lot of hair on your furniture and clothes. You should also brush your Shiba Corgi thoroughly at least four or five times a week. It's best to use a bristle brush and a metal comb because of their thick, double coat. You can bathe your dog with a mild shampoo if necessary, but not too often, as the Shiba Corgi can be sensitive to dry, irritated skin. During the bath, you should also clean your dog's ears. It's also important to trim his nails if necessary, about once a month. Brush your dog's teeth daily, or at least three times a week, for optimum dental health. |
