A brief presentation of the Miniature Aussiedoodle

The Miniature Aussiedoodle is a hybrid of the Miniature American Shepherd and the Miniature Poodle. At first glance, you might think this hybrid is a mixture of a mix and a purebred, but in reality, the Miniature American Shepherd is not a cross or a mixed breed. This purebred dog was created by breeding together the smallest puppies from purebred litters to obtain smaller versions of the larger breed. Both parent breeds of the Mini Aussiedoodle are extremely intelligent, being called by some the “Einsteins” of dog breeds.

History of the Miniature Aussiedoodle

The Miniature Aussiedoodle is a hybrid dog breed resulting from the crossing of a Miniature American Shepherd with a Miniature Poodle, creating a dog of superior intelligence. The history of the hybrid dog breed itself dates back some 20-30 years, being developed in the USA for what appear to be companion training, agility and obedience purposes, although some hunting options are probably also used, given the heritage of the parent breeds.

	The Miniature American Shepherd parent breed, at first glance, appears to be a hybrid itself, but in reality, the dog breed is a careful and targeted breeding of smaller purebred Australian puppies in litters with other smaller purebred Australian puppies, allowing breeders to carefully create a smaller version of the Australian Shepherd while retaining the same dog breed characteristics and a strong sense of the larger breed. Dog breeders are to be congratulated, as this careful and focused breeding concept has resulted in exactly the type of canine originally intended. The Miniature American Shepherd Dog breed was introduced to the USA in the 1960s, and the mini version was developed in 1968, using the above breeding concept for farming and breeding purposes. It was combined with the Miniature Poodle to create our characteristic hybrid, the Miniature Aussiedoodle. The Miniature American Shepherd is quite intelligent and well suited to any canine activity in which you might want to involve your pet. These activities can inclose: agility, herding, obedience, disc dog, flying ball and the beloved furry family member in general. After a number of years of controversy over whether the mini version was a separate breed from the larger version, with the American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club having previously grouped the two dog breeds together, finally in 2011 the American Kennel Club listed the Miniature Australian Shepherd in the Foundation Stock Service, allowing it to be recognized once the number of registrations reached 150.

	The Miniature Poodle breed was created over 500 years ago out of a desire for a smaller version of the well-known Standard Poodle, wanting a Poodle that was easier to maintain and cheaper to feed. The miniature dog breed became very popular in circuses in the 1950s and 1960s due to the ease of training and their level of intelligence. The mini version of the Poodle is still a very active dog, with hunting characteristics similar to the standard version, which is one of the oldest known dog breeds.

Appearance of the Miniature Aussiedoodle

Your Miniature Aussiedoodle is a hybrid of the Miniature American Shepherd and the Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle and, as such, can take on the appearance traits of one or both of the parent breeds. Your Miniature Aussiedoodle will probably be small to medium-sized, 30.5 to 46 centimeters tall, weighing between 7 and 16 kilos, with floppy ears, almond-shaped, almost black or blue eyes and a medium-sized muzzle and scissor bite. The coat will be soft and silky and straight to curly with colors available in white, blue, black, yellow, brown, red, silver and gray.

Temperament of the Miniature Aussiedoodle

The Miniature Aussiedoodle is a dog breed hybrid of the Miniature American Shepherd and the Miniature Poodle and, as such, can inherit temperament traits from one or both of its parent breeds. Your hybrid furry family member will make an excellent addition to the family. They are described as courageous, energetic, gentle, intelligent, loyal, outgoing, protective, calm and social. They are also very good with children, the family cat, other dogs and animals, with early socialization helping to achieve this. Miniature Aussiedoodles are friendly with everyone, which can affect their ability to be an effective watchdog. They are intelligent and have an eager-to-please attitude, which makes them easy to train using positive training methods. This is not a dog that will do well when left alone for long periods, with the strong capacity to develop annoying destructive behaviors that accompany boredom. They'll love a home that has a family member at home. They are active and energetic, and also love to play.

Needs and activities of the Miniature Aussiedoodle

Your Miniature Aussiedoodle is an energetic small to medium-sized dog. He needs 40 to 60 minutes of exercise a day to manage these energy levels. Daily walks or jogs, recreation in the dog parks along the way, playing in the fenced yard or playing fetch or Frisbee will be much appreciated by your furry family member. Agility and obedience training after the age of 1 will also help keep them mentally occupied. Agility training is not recommended before the age of 1 to reduce the risk of permanent damage to their young, tender bones. They can live in an apartment, condo or family home, with or without a fenced yard, in urban or rural settings. Because their heritage incorporates hunting and tracking, you'll be well advised to keep your pet on a leash whenever it's outside the house or yard, unless of course you like to chase them as they follow the latest and greatest interesting scent wherever it leads. These puppies are an excellent choice for all climates, having a coat that allows them to tolerate both hot and cold climates.

Maintenance of the Miniature Aussiedoodle

The Miniature Aussiedoodle, a hybrid breed of the Miniature American Shepherd and the Miniature Poodle, is considered a low-maintenance dog. The hybrid itself is a seasonal excretor that should be brushed two or three times a week. As the parent breed of the Miniature Poodle is hypoallergenic, there's a chance that your hybrid pet will be, which perhaps makes this dog an excellent choice for those with respiratory problems or asthma. Your Miniature Aussiedoodle hybrid will need to have its ears checked and cleaned weekly as part of the grooming process. Dental check-ups and at-home tooth brushing at least two to three times a week, if not daily, will help prevent periodontal disease and the tooth loss that goes with it. Toenails should also be checked weekly as part of the grooming process, and trimmed if necessary. Hybrids don't need to be bathed unless it's necessary to maintain the oils needed for the coat. The level of odor and drool from this hybrid is considered low.
