| The Shar Pei is another ancient breed from China with a distinctive blue tongue, like the Chow Chow dog that may have been used to create the Shar Pei. It was used as a working dog for herding, guarding and hunting. The Shar Pei was even used as a fighting dog, its loose, wrinkled skin being difficult for its opponent to catch. At one time, the Shar Pei was considered good to eat in China, and no one was allowed to own one as a pet. This led to a rapid decline in numbers, which were only saved from extinction by a breeder who promoted the Shar Pei outside China. Selective breeding overcame some of the breed's earlier health problems, such as painful eye problems and diminished folds, to make the modern Shar Pei a healthier, stronger breed. In 1978, the Shar Pei was registered as one of the rarest breeds on the planet. The concentrated efforts of American breeders reversed the trend, and their numbers grew steadily after 1981, as their popularity spread around the world. Today, the Shar Pei is one of the most popular dogs in the UK, and occupies a prominent place in other countries as a loyal companion and pet. |
